We got all the deets on the new Star Wars Battlefront game!

Cape Town - On Friday, 20 November, nearly a hundred gamers descended on the MWEB MCave in Cape Town for Gigabyte's unofficial launch party for the newly-released Battlefront game from Electronic Arts.

Star Wars Battlefront is the latest game in the well-known science-fiction universe. The title offers gamers the opportunity to take the side of Rebel or Imperial forces as they battle across a variety of game modes and virtual settings like the forest moon of Endor.

The predominantly online multiplayer game allows players to take control of their favourite heroes like Darth Vader, fly the famous X-Wing or even pilot a massive four-legged Imperial AT-AT. The game is available on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Attendees at the launch had the chance to try out this new first-person-shooter game on Xbox One and PC, but the fun didn't end there.

The first mini-event had players battling in-game to overcome waves of Stormtroopers in Tatooine Survival. The next event provided attendees the opportunity to rock their moves in a galactic dance-off using the Star Wars Kinect game.

Finally, potential Stormtroopers tested their accuracy using a Nerf Gun to take down targets in a shooting gallery.

Each mini-event earned entries into the main draw for a share in over R20 000 worth of prizes. In between all the fun, gamers could check out the latest in gaming hardware from Gigabyte, including a number of gaming laptops, mice, keyboards, and graphics cards including the brand new GTX 980 Xtreme, which was revealed for the first time at the event.

Also on display were the latest awe-inspiring curved gaming monitors from BenQ, which are certain to make it onto a lot of gamers' wish lists after the event. The Occulus Rift virtual reality headset offered tech enthusiasts a chance to see what it's like to operate a large robot from a first person view.

Many tummy butterflies were released as gamers felt their senses being fooled by the immersive technology. Cosplayers showed off impressive costumes include a superbly done Twi'lek, Chewbacca and cuddly Ewok. This is notwithstanding a number of lightsabre-wielding Jedi and Sith.

The Cape Town team from Rectron, distributors for Gigabyte and BenQ, also joined in the fun dressing up as Star Wars characters Princess Leia, Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker. The team from Loot.co.za had a host of merchandise on sale at discounted offers, including the launch title, Gigabyte hardware and a ton of Star Wars merchandise.

One of the highlights was the super cute range of Funko Wacky Wobbler Star Wars bobble heads based on the soon-to-be-released Star Wars movie, The Force Awakens. During the evening, in between the mini-events, drinks and snacks, attendees also had the opportunity to win spot prizes from Gigabyte and Loot.co.za. Music was provided by the DJ team of WhatIsFiction who delighted in playing the Star Wars cantina song much to the chagrin of comedian MC, Gareth Woods.

The #GigabteStarWars event resonated well with the audience from a fun and participative perspective as during the evening the event hashtag trended number 1 on Twitter in South Africa.

The evening culminated in a grand prize draw for the 6 mystery box main prizes, including a high-end Gigabyte graphics card worth approximately R8 000, a BenQ gaming screen worth over R7 500 and a Star Wars hamper from Loot.co.za.

There were also prizes for the top competitors in the Star Wars Dance off and Stormtrooper training. With a wish of "May the Force be with you", the gamers headed on home after an evening of thrills and good company.
