Bad words

There are all kinds of bad words.

Swear words, lies, insults, and the worst of the lot - misspelled ones.

Some people go to a lot of trouble to shield our ears from bad words. Gareth Cliff's producer has been suspended because he forgot to remove the f-word from a sound clip.

I say 'f-word' and not the real word because I don't want your spam filter to block this mail, not because I'm afraid of offending your sensibilities.

I agree with Gareth that all this brouhaha about a little swear word is unnecessary, particularly because there are far worse words being thrown around that desperately need our attention.

For instance, Dineo's Diary, a local reality TV series on Vuzu about the life of Dineo Ranaka, is riddled with misspelled words emblazoned on the screen. More than one and you just can't call it a "typo" anymore, honey...

Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte has a signature exclamation: "Jeah!". Yes, spelled with a J. No, not correct in any way.

Kristen Stewart's desperate apology for her indiscretion with a married man. A lie. Big, fat, false words used to drum up support.

Elton John has also been throwing around a few choice words about his arch enemy Madonna, calling her a fairground stripper, among other expletives. Hey! What did fairground strippers ever do to you, Elton?

Let us not forget about Joost and Amor who will use any bad words they can wrap their tongues around to shame each other.

See, this is verbal abuse. The corruption of good words in a beautiful language. It breaks my heart.

How do you feel about swear words, and when is it appropriate to use them? Give us an earful! Send your thoughts to feedback@channel24.co.za and you could be published.
