What makes a celebrity a 'poephol'? Or do we hate them because they think they’re better than us?
Recently, Afrikaans newspaper Sondag branded Die Antwoord’s zef rapper Ninja the biggest 'poephol' of 2010. In the article, Angola Badprop gave 10 reasons why Waddy “Ninja” Jones deserved the Biggest Poephol of 2010 title: apparently he’s pretentious, he’s two-faced and his tattoos lie.
We asked our readers to vote for the Trainwreck of the Year in our Top 10 of 2010 poll. Lindsay Lohan won with a quarter of the votes and Jub Jub, who is currently facing four murder charges following an accident in which four schoolchildren were killed, was placed second. Personally, I think the prize should have gone to Jub Jub.
Channel24 readers also felt that Joost and Amor, mad Mel Gibson and bling queen Khanyi Mbau deserved special mention.
You probably wouldn’t want to admit it, but I think the biggest idiot award often goes to whoever gets the most headlines. If fewer media ran the Joost story, would we have cared less?
I asked our friends at Health24, News24, Sport24 and Women24 who they felt most deserved the idiot award, this is what they had to say:
Health24:
We would like to nominate the thousands of international idiots who bought and wore and swore by… the piece of rubber known as the Power Balance bracelet. Come on guys. Did you really believe your bracelets gave you balance, flexibility, endurance, increased range of motion and strength, and took away stress, jet lag, and the rest of life’s problems?
News24:
Our very own not-so-secret bloody agent Julius Malema – don’t touch us on our newsroom, Julius!
Sport24:
Heading the nominees this year are Bok coach Peter de Villiers for his nasty “Foot in Mouth” disease and dastardly use of the bench, Andries Bekker for “playing away from home” via sneaky little visits to a public park, and Bakkies Botha for his crude head-butt on All Black scrumhalf Jimmy Cowan.
