Is winning everything?

Looking at Channel24's homepage today, I just felt like everything's about being the best, topping the chart, scoring the most votes and ultimately winning.

Rihanna topped another Billboard chart, Lady Gaga is the most followed celeb on Twitter with 30 million fans, Mila Kunis is Esquire's Sexiest Woman Alive, and Robert Pattinson is Glamour UK's Sexiest Man of the year for a fourth time! It's all about being on top.

Then there's Khaya Mthethwa, the winner of Idols season 8, who grabbed the title as well as more than 80% of the final votes cast. There's never been such a big gap between first and second place in SA Idols history.

Some may say second place is just another term for 'loser', but some of these reality TV runners-up have managed to forge more successful careers than the season winners. One Direction, Cher Lloyd and even Jennifer Hudson have proved that winning isn't everything.

We live in a world that is constantly measured and rated - from our talent to our looks to our wealth and more. For celebs this pressure is magnified. While I often have delusions of being famous, at times like these, I'm glad I don't have to claw my way up every ladder, every day, just to stay relevant.

I applaud those celebs who don't always do what they do like they're doing it for TV.

Look at the dashing Leonardo DiCaprio, who's flexed his acting chops in countless fantastic roles, yet he's always overlooked at Hollywood awards ceremonies.

He's just one famous, fine example of someone who keeps on keeping on, despite never going home with the gold.
