On Riaan's retirement

2012-11-27 14:17
Today is the first day of Riaan Cruywagen's retirement - and we agree - it's long overdue.

I don't mean that in a can-he-get-off-the-TV-already kind of way. I mean it in the your-holiday-is-well-deserved kind of way.

We at Channel24 know all too well that news happens on its own clock and it doesn't care if you're on holiday, in your PJs or just about to discover a big revelation in the latest episode of Revenge.

While life at a news desk can be absolutely thrilling, it also means your life isn't always your own.

In an interview on the 19:00 news on SABC2 last night, Riaan Cruywagen's wife Riana said she is so looking forward to being able to be impulsive and say "let's go away for the weekend!"

She also can't wait to see movies and theatre shows with her husband, while Riaan is thrilled at the prospect of spending evenings at home - something he hasn't been able to do for over 7 000 evenings in the last 37 years!

However, I highly doubt Riaan will be able to sit still doing nothing for too long! With his recent foray into starring in hilarious YouTube videos, I imagine Riaan will be entertaining us for years to come, perhaps just in new ways.

We've also been so touched by all the lovely tributes pouring in from our readers who will definitely miss tuning in at night to see Riaan deliver the news like only he can. If you haven't sent yours in, e-mail us now and you could be published.

Here's to you, Riaan.

Local is very lekker!
