What's your favourite Charlize Theron movie?

It's hard to pick just one out of her long list of film appearances. From oldies like The Astronaut's Wife to starring in two different big screen releases this month, Charlize has definitely put in the leg work to achieve star status.

Here at Channel24 headquarters, we've all got our soft spots for some of her particular works.

I couldn't just choose one. It's a toss-up between The Devil's Advocate and Young Adult.

Her role opposite Keanu Reeves really intrigued me because she played a girl from a small town moving to a big city, fighting off the evil temptations of money and power. And as a Benoni girl making it big in LA, Charlize knew exactly how that felt.

On the other end of the spectrum, in Young Adult Charlize is able to accurately portray the essence of Mavis as a character with a promising future, whose star has fallen hard. Clearly that's not Charlize's career trajectory. Onse Charlz is still on the up and up.

Movies editor Shaheema Barodien picked Charlize's Oscar winner.

"No discussion about Charlize Theron's illustrious career is complete without talking about the role as convicted serial killer Aileen Wournos in Monster – the role that won her an Oscar after her first nomination. It propelled her straight onto the A-List. Yes, Charlize "uglified" herself to play the real-life character, adding 15kg to her lithe model figure, a bad complexion, prosthetic teeth and shaving off her eyebrows for the role, but her performance was one that surpassed the visage and went to the heart of a deeply troubled woman. There was certainly nothing "monstrous" about Charlize's performance."

News editor Jean-Marie Korff went for the classic - The Cider House Rules.

"It's fair to say that for the early part of her career, Charlize was able to get her foot through Hollywood's doors because of her beauty. Movies like 2 Days in the Valley, Reindeer Games and Woody Allen's Celebrity made full use of her looks to play either the doe-eyed innocent or the femme fatale. The Cider House Rules, released in 1999 and which won two Oscars, was perhaps the first major film to make the best of Charlize's beauty and discover a true talent beneath that was just bursting to make itself known."

Our intern Siya - who is also the only guy here at Channel24 - gets all nostalgic when he thinks of Charlize in Mighty Joe Young.

"I liked Charlize in the movie because she played the role of a caregiver to animals in Africa which was like taking her back to her African roots."
