Cape Town - After 16 years experience, nine albums and a dozen SAMA nominations between them, Johannesburg based musos Josie Field and Laurie Levine have come together to create a beautiful side project, Side By Side.

The two will embark on an extensive summer tour with a show that comprises the blues infused soulful vocal of Josie Field combined with the intimate folk, country styles of Laurie Levine. A real treat for music lovers, these performances are solely acoustic utilising a variety of instruments including guitar, banjo, ukulele and more along with their unique vocal harmonies, as they present slightly different interpretations of their most popular songs, allowing both old and new fans to experience the material in a whole new light.

We got to ask the two talented women a few questions before their tour kicks off this weekend.

Check it out here:

Channel24:
You guys are almost embarking on a tour together. How did this come about? Have you guys known each for a long time? Tell us more.

Laurie:
We started out in the music industry at around the same time, and over many years, have shared stages, done double bills and moved in similar circles. In March 2013 we thought about doing a double bill tour, and after some thought, decided it would be more economical to come together and play on each other’s material instead of bringing a band along.  That’s how ‘Side by Side’ started. We had no idea then that it was going to be a project with longevity. But after the first tour, the response was so overwhelming and positive, and we had such a good time on the road together, that we decided to do it again. This will be our fourth tour together.

Channel24:
What can people expect from your set?

Laurie:
They can expect more of what ‘Side by Side’ is about- indie/country folk, acoustic instruments, lots of harmonies, completely new takes on some of our original songs as well as some select covers. And we have recently started to experiment with some co-writing, so people will get to hear some brand new material too.

Channel24:
What do you guys do to keep busy while on the road?

Laurie:
We laugh a lot. And we tend to talk a lot too. Share stories, listen to music, shoot the breeze….but really, there’s not much time to fill when you’re on the road. It’s one long rush to get to sound check, set up, play, strike, get some sleep etc. On this trip we’ll be getting into the audiobook thing!

Channel24:
We know the saying 'what happens on tour, stays on tour'… but, please can you share one of your funniest or weirdest tour stories with us?

Josie:
We have had such fun on tour, because we get on really well. We always find something to laugh about whether it’s Laurie forgetting her jeans at home and having to perform in shorts or me getting really car sick while trying to type an sms while we drive round Chapmans Peak!

Channel24:
What is the one thing no one knows about you? J

Josie:
My phobia is dirty feet.

Laurie:
I'm a control freak.

Channel24:
If you could collaborate with any artist in the world, who would it be and why?

Josie:
I know Laurie Levine and I would answer quite differently. I would love to collaborate with Kings Of Leon, Xavier Rudd or Jack White.
