Cape Town - Streaming services are taking over the world, and are fast becoming the preferred method for watching the latest (and most well-loved) television series.

But what makes Showmax special? If the close proximity to local is lekker content such as popular lifestyle and reality shows, as well as some of our all-time favourite shows such as Binnelanders and Egoli, is not your cup of tea, there’s also a variety of international series that are available only on Showmax in South Africa.

Here are the eight highly acclaimed series you will only find on Showmax in South Africa:

1. The Young Pope

The talked-about drama series starring Jude Law as the first American pontiff, Lenny Belardo, made its debut on South African shores on Showmax. The series follows Belardo and his journey as the newly elected Pius XIII, his resistance to the Vatican stewards, and his utter disregard for what people think of him. The Young Pope also stars Diane Keaton as Sister Mary. This is an excellent show for anyone who is a fan of conspiracy dramas, and those who wouldn’t mind a glimpse of Jude Law’s bum.

2. The Frankenstein Chronicles

In a series where Sean Bean doesn’t die, he plays Inspector John Marlott, who investigates a series of gristly crimes in London in 1827, committed by someone who may be attempting to reanimate the dead. If you are a fan of historical dramas or detective series - and have a strong stomach - this is the show for you.

3. The Late Late Show with James Corden

The home of Carpool Karaoke, The Late Late Show with James Corden brings together celebrities and musical guests, from Donald Glover to Michelle Obama to Salma Hayek, for an entertaining late-night show. Corden’s impressive improvisation skills make the show entertaining and authentic. It is a great watch for lovers of variety shows and comedy.

4. Kingdom

Kingdom is set at the Navy Street Gym, where many of the US’s most promising Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters train. Frank Grillo plays coach Alvey Kulina, who owns the gym and attempts to train former fighter Ryan Wheeler (Matt Lauria), who was released from prison in fighting form. Nick Jonas stars as Nate, Alvey’s son who was forced to stop training after he was attacked. This series is great for fans of MMA and sports-based dramas. Season 3 comes to Showmax express from the USA.

5. Younger

It is seen as the greatest compliment to be told that you look younger than you really are. Forty-year-old Liza, however, took that popular compliment and used it to change her entire lifestyle. Posing as a 26-year-old, she gets a job in publishing, a new group of friends, and new opportunities to meet interesting young men. Younger stars Sutton Foster as Liza and Hilary Duff as Kelsey, and is a great pick for all lovers of comedy.

6. Class

The Doctor Who universe is all the talk since last week’s announcement that Jodie Whittaker will be taking over from Peter Capaldi as the Doctor. Why not explore the universe further with the spinoff Class, which follows six students at the Coal Hill School in London? The students balance homework, dating, parents and time travelling in an interesting and unique way. This is a must-watch for all sci-fi fans and Whovians.

7. Taboo

Taboo has Tom Hardy starring as James Keziah Delaney, an adventurer who was long believed to be dead. He returns to London from Africa in 1814 to inherit his late father’s defunct shipping empire, and a very valuable piece of land in North America. In a drama with plenty of conspiracy, betrayal and bloodshed, this should not be missed by fans of thrillers, historical dramas and action.

8. Rectify

A man who spent 19 years on death row before being released tries to put the past behind him while trying to live a normal life in his small hometown. But things come to a head in the final season of this gripping thriller about a brutal unsolved murder. Season 4, which has a rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, is only available on Showmax.
