Everybody celebrates Halloween in different ways – some like to dress up and go to costume parties, some like to stay home and hand out sweets to neighbourhood kids who trick or treat, while others enjoy hosting a scary movie marathon.

There is an endless selection of films you can indulge in for a Halloween scare-a-thon, but we would like to propose that you try something new this year, and binge-watch one (or ALL!) of the excellent horror series now available to stream on Showmax:

1. Penny Dreadful

Imagine a world where Victor Frankenstein is creating his monster alongside Dorian Grey! Plenty of the classic storybook monsters are living in tandem to each other in this series. There’s Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) the explorer, Ethan Chandler (Josh Harnett) the American gunslinger, and Vanessa Ives (Eva Green) a medium who attempts to combat supernatural threats, all set in spooky Victorian London.

2. Channel Zero

If you are not keen on sleeping, try Channel Zero. This frighteningly good anthology series is based on creepypastas, which are internet short-form horror stories. The first season covers ‘Candle Cove’, about a child psychologist who investigates a strange show that he watched as a kid. He thinks the show had something to do with nightmarish events that happened to him – including his twin brother going missing – and that it could be happening again.

3. Beauty & the Beast

If you like a little romance in your horror, try Beauty & the Beast. The series features Detective Catherine Chandler (Kristen Kreuk) who discovers deadly secrets after finding an ex-military doctor who was believed to have died in Afghanistan in 2002. The doctor has stayed in hiding because of his condition, which causes rage to turn him into a monster. This is not the happy sing-along animation you’d expect from the title.

4. The Vampire Diaries

A teenage girl finds herself torn between two centuries-old vampire brothers, and finds herself and her friends caught up in their supernatural world. If you are looking for a series that will entrance rather than scare you and keep you on the edge of the seat for the entire binge-watch, this is the series for you.

5. The Whispers

There is nothing creepier than spooky children, and The Whispers tells the story of a selection of children around Washington DC who all start talking to the same imaginary friend named Drill who persuades them to participate in dangerous games. The FBI calls Claire Bennigan (Lily Rabe), a child specialist, to investigate this phenomenon.

6. Teen Wolf

If you like some comedy with your horror, try out Teen Wolf. Scott McCall (Tyler Posey) is an awkward teenager whose life changes when he is bitten by a werewolf while walking in the woods. This prompts an array of supernatural threats to make their way to Scott’s hometown of Beacon Hills, and it’s up to him and his merry band of friends and schoolmates to defend the town.

7. Lesilo Rula

If you want to watch some local drama, there is the Tswana series Lesilo Rula which follows Raitlhoane, who uses a scary creature that is believed to be a dead man that was raised from his grave using muti to destroy the lives of his enemies, and to help him elude the police. This is a thrilling supernatural series with originally African themes that will keep you glued to the screen.
