Hidden in Cape Town, a surprising oasis of charm and the hippest burger spot

Capitec Bank has launched its #LiveBetter campaign, which encourages South Africans to explore new and unexpected places in their cities. Trying out some new places is a great place to start and as a Capitec client you get to enjoy some perks too like a complimentary glass of bubbly at one of the best bars of Cape Town.

Oasis of style

Looking for a unique oasis in town for drinks and dinner? Kloof Street House, on buzzy Kloof Street and not far from the bars and burger joints of Long Street, is a genuinely delightful surprise. To walk off the bustling street is to be welcomed by unobtrusive security and a peaceful garden, and steps up into a surprisingly sumptuous and rich interior more reminiscent of a Victorian drawing room than a restaurant. Open fires and colourful, vintage-style wallpaper contribute to this sense of aristocratic, hedonistic style.

There’s a hugely impressive whiskey collection, for sure, but the real highlight is the bar staff, who are all highly trained and knowledgeable mixologist more than happy to experiment, or to whip up a classic cocktail. It’s worth testing their skills – they really are the real deal.

Settled at your table, you’ll find a pretty sumptuous menu seemingly more suitable to high-dining restaurant in Constantia. The baked Camembert is a brilliantly warming starter and the Moroccan spiced lamb main are dishes to genuinely write home about. It might not sound too exciting, but the cheesecake makes for a delicate and decadent desert. Waiting staff are unobtrusive but there when you need them, and know the menu intimately.

Kloof Street House is a testament to doing things properly, and proves that consistently adhering to principals of quality and service will allow an oasis of gastronomic excellence in a town setting to thrive.

Tip: If the weather’s good and the Cape Doctor is out of town, you can book a table in the garden, which, in summer, is a beautifully lit romantic retreat from the heart of the city, mere metres from Kloof Street.

Capitec cardholders enjoy a free complementary glass of bubbly between 12:00pm – 17:00 pm until 24 December when ordering a meal from the menu.

Hippest burger bar and more

Situated on the corner of Wale and Bree street, Clarke’s is an awesome, unassuming little hub with a lively all-day restaurant and night-time party spot with a burger-led menu and bands.

Bar snacks like, twice-fried fries with aioli or their Rooster Dog with kimchi and sriracha, go perfectly with an ice-cold beer. If you're an oyster fan, this is the place for baked oysters and on Monday-Saturday 5pm get Fresh west coast oysters for R15 each!

Their drinks menu packs a punch too, with cocktails such as their own hibiscus cordial with gin, a decent wine list, a good selection of craft beers and an all-day shot and beer special for R32, will give you loads of options for the after, and after-after work drink.
