1) Nurse Jackie

Why should the doctors get all the glory when there’s a carer like Jackie Peyton on the job? ER nurse Jackie is possibly the best in the business. The only problem is she believes in the healing power of medicine a little too much ... While Jackie’s drug addiction gets her into frequent trouble, both personal and professional, there’s no denying her skills in the ward and her charming bedside manner. This medical comedy-drama garnered many award nominations and one Emmy® win for Edie Falco (who plays the lead).

2) The Knick

Clive Owen stars in this historical medical drama as Dr John Thackery, the leader of the surgical staff at the Knickerbocker Hospital in New York City in 1900. Owen’s character is partially based on a real-life surgeon of that era and the hospital is a fictionalised version of the real thing. Thackery must overcome his opium and cocaine addictions if he is to succeed in attracting a wealthier clientele to the hospital, while testing out new medical techniques that are seen as cutting-edge. It’s pretty gory, but never fear, you're in good hands with acclaimed director Steven Soderbergh.

3) Scrubs

D (Zach Braff) is a medical intern with an overactive imagination who is desperate to impress his callous boss Dr Cox while treating patients at the hospital. His hilarious daydreams are a recurring feature, and his interactions with his friends, fellow ‘scrubs’ Turk (Donald Faison, who you'll recognise from Clueless) and Elliot (Sarah Chalke), often border on the ridiculous. Every episode has a heart-warming resolution, and you'll find yourself rooting for these eager young doctors, who, despite their hijinks and jokes, want to learn all they can about earning patients’ trust. And like all Braff’s productions, Scrubs has a super soundtrack.

4) Masters of Sex

Follow the fascinating story of Dr William Masters (Michael Sheen) and Virginia Johnson (Lizzy Caplan), two pioneering researchers of human sexuality. Based in the conservative world of 1950s America, their groundbreaking research is considered to have been one of the sparks that ignited the sexual revolution of the 1960s. The critically acclaimed series is based on the biography of the real-life Dr Masters and features stellar performances, beautiful period décor, and a titillating story line.

5) House

Get your House fix with all eight seasons of this smash-hit show starring Hugh Laurie as the Dr Gregory House. House may be rude, cranky, insulting, and a bully, but he’s also a medical genius. The only reason he keeps his job, despite his arrogance and constant flouting of hospital rules and procedures, is that he’s almost clairvoyant at diagnosis, picking up on subtle clues that others miss. With every season now available, all his witty wisecracks and baffling cases can be enjoyed from the very beginning.
