Ragnar Lothbrok, Vikings

Season 4 of this historical drama series launched on Showmax this week, beautifully bringing to life more of the Norse legends recorded by oral tradition and ancient texts. The infamous warrior Ragnar Lothbrok is back, and the raids, pillages, battles and betrayals are set to continue apace. Notable for its huge scope, vicious violence and dramatic atmosphere, Vikings is compulsory viewing for fantasy epic fans.

Daenerys Targaryen, Game of Thrones

All six seasons of Game of Thrones are currently available for streaming on Showmax, so you can catch up on all the feuds and fights to the death that take place in the seven kingdoms of Westeros ahead of the release of Season 7 later this year. Daenerys, known as Stormborn and the mother of dragons, is undoubtedly one of the show’s fiercest warriors, out to claim the Iron Throne for her own, and on the way, using her strong moral compass and sheer ruthlessness to dispatch of her enemies.

Peggy Carter, Marvel's Agent Carter

The world’s gone Wonder Woman crazy, and until you can see the film, Seasons 1 and 2 of Marvel’s Agent Carter, currently on Showmax, will keep you occupied. Peggy’s one of the most hardcore female spies you’ll ever meet, working for the Strategic Scientific Reserve by day, and by night defending Howard Stark from his enemies who want to frame him for treason. She’s also got to fight the stigma that comes with being a single woman in 1940s America - which is probably her most challenging battle.

Robin Hood

This blockbuster smash-hit war epic starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett was directed by Ridley Scott. Crowe plays the common archer Robin Longstride who decides to impersonate a dead knight, Sir Robert Loxley, in order to make it back to his homeland of England. But he finds a land in ruins, with King John causing widespread suffering with harsh new tax laws. What he also finds is Loxley’s widow, Lady Marion - and the will to lead the English army against the invading French.

Michael Burry, The Big Short

Set in the mid-2000s, shortly ahead of the financial crisis in the US caused by the collapse of the housing market, this biographical comedy-drama stars Christian Bale as the maverick and highly unconventional hedge fund manager Michael Burry. Discovering that the housing market is extremely unstable, and predicting its collapse, Burry decides to profit from the impending collapse by betting against the market. This film also stars Ryan Gosling, Steve Carrell and Brad Pitt in two other, separate storylines set around the time of the crisis.

Christopher McCandless, Into the Wild

Inspired by the true story of the privileged college graduate who turned his back on a successful working life and instead followed his dream to live alone in the Alaskan wilderness in the early 90s. He travels across North America on a journey to find himself, and the characters he meets along the way inspire him in different ways to live his life on his own terms. Starring Emile Hirsch as McCandless, and also starring Vince Vaughn and Kristen Stewart.
