8 reasons kooky Karen from Will & Grace steals the show

Johannesburg - It’s been 10 years since our favourite pill-popping, cashmere-wearing, fun-loving, squeaky-voiced, politically incorrect drunk and uber-snob Karen Walker (Megan Mullally) and the cast of comedy series Will & Grace (1998-2006) left our screens.

But now it’s time to mix yourself a martini (make it dirty – like Karen’s sense of humour) and sharpen your tongue, as Will & Grace is back with all 8 seasons on ShowMax as of Friday, 25 November.

To celebrate the return of one of TV’s most awesome foursomes, here are 8 reasons kooky Karen is the long-lost frenemy we sort-of wish we had.

1. That Voice

Since episode 1 of season 1, fans have been in awe of Karen’s voice, which could easily shatter one of her crystal champers glasses.

2. Friends forever

Bitchy, mean, insulting … it’s no wonder Karen’s not big on friends. But she’s got one true pal, BFF Jack McFarland (Sean Hayes), who she met in episode 2 of season 1. Their signature friendship move – the tummy touch where they lift up their shirts and rub their tummies together – is a fan favourite.

3. Pearls of wisdom

Inappropriate advice is one of Karen’s trademarks. When her boss and frenemy Grace Adler (Debra Messing) gets dumped in episode 7 of season 2, Karen is quick to offer some of her signature wisdom: “Grace, it's time to get your head out of the dumps and your legs in the air.”

4. Booze-a-thon

Besides Jack, Karen’s best friend is booze. She’s drinking cocktails before noon like it’s no biggie, and she’s proud of it. As she told lawyer Ben Doucette (Gregory Hines) in episode 21 of season 2, “Honey, I'd suck the alcohol out of a deodorant stick.”

5. Super sarcastic

Outspoken Karen isn’t afraid to say exactly what’s on her mind. Or cut you off mid-sentence with a verbal bitch slap - like the time after Will Truman (Eric McCormack) made a nasty comment about Karen in episode 21 of season 3, and she snapped back, “Oh, honey. I got a fake laugh with your name all over it.”

6. Back-handed compliments

Don’t expect a compliment from Karen to be a good thing. In episode 3 of season 5, she spots a bouquet of roses on Grace’s desk and calmly says, “Oh nice, somebody got some flowers. Or as I like to call them, poor people's jewellery.”

7. Charity begins .... elsewhere

During a Christmas lunch in episode 11 of season 5, Jack says he feels sorry for the homeless who don’t have anything to eat, so Karen comes up with the perfect solution: “Let's take a picture of us eating and show it to them,” she squeals with glee.

8.Uppers (not downers)

Karen’s also quite attached to her pills. In episode 20 of the final season, she says her motto is “drugs not hugs”. And in the series finale, episode 23, she tells Jack, “I'm high from something I found under the sink in your bathroom.”
