Cape Town - ShowMax has added a new feature to its Android, Apple TV, iOS and web apps that supports multiple user profiles on a single account.

This feature makes it possible to customise the experience of individual users and also to limit the access of children to age-suitable material.

Launched in August 2015, internet TV service ShowMax has Africa’s largest on-demand catalogue of TV shows and movies.

Over the past year, ShowMax has rolled out new functionality on a regular basis including the ability to cap data usage and the ability to download content for viewing offline.

The latest app development from ShowMax is the ability to create multiple user profiles for each account.

Speaking about this, Chief Product Officer Barron Ernst said: “Why are profiles a big deal?

Different users can now customise their own experience, create individual watchlists and receive personalised recommendations. It’s even possible to set up themed profiles – one for romantic comedies and another for action as an example.

“Perhaps most importantly, this new feature makes it possible to create kids’ profiles and protect children by ensuring only age-appropriate content is accessible.”

Profiles can be PIN code protected, and the watchlist and recently watched summaries from one profile are not visible to other profiles.

A single ShowMax subscription allows for simultaneous viewing of different TV shows and movies on two different devices. In keeping with this, two different profiles can be active on separate devices simultaneously.

Age settings:

Four different age settings are available: younger kids, older kids, teens, and adults.

How to set it up:

In order to create profiles on the web app, click on the user name (upper right of the screen) > my account > profiles > add profile. Age settings and PIN codes can be set here.

In order to create profiles on Android and iOS apps, click on the menu button (top left of the screen) > my account > profiles > add profile.

If profiles are being used to limit the content available to children, it is recommended that the original profile used to set up the account is PIN protected.
