Johannesburg - Binge away the break-up blues by watching other people screw up their relationships instead.

Break-ups suck – these six shows on ShowMax will help you get through it.

1. Girls

You won’t feel half as bad about getting dumped when you see these girls stuffing their lives up. Hit show Girls, created by Lena Dunham, features Hannah and her equally flawed friends Jessa, Marnie and Shoshanna trying to “adult” in Brooklyn, New York. They’re trying to live their best lives, but reality keeps getting in their way. It’s unlikely you’ll ever do anything quite as cringe-worthy as Hannah making a pass at her ancient boss in season 1 or Marnie’s super embarrassing YouTube music video she made with Charlie in season 3.

2. Sex and the City

Before Girls, there was Sex in the City. Also set in New York, you’ll feel a lot less alone when see how how hard it is to find a good man for this group of 30-something friends. From Carrie’s on-again-off-again thing with Mr Big to the numerous jerks Miranda endures until she finally settles down with Steve Brady, you’ll laugh and cry with these stylish city gals.

3. Friends

So no one told you life was gonna be this way? Your job’s a joke, you’re broke and your love life’s DOA? Friends just doesn’t get old, even though it ended in 2004 it still ranks up there as one of the best sitcoms ever. From Ross’s three divorces and Ross and Rachel’s infamous “break” to Chandler’s dalliances with shrill-voiced Janice, before settling down with Monica of course, there are loads of romantic flops to laugh at. And hey, at least your twin sister Ursula Buffay didn’t star in adult movies and use your name, like Phoebe’s did.

4. The Affair

Just because you’re married doesn’t mean your problems are over. This haunting, award-winning drama is based on the notion that there are two sides to every story … and every affair. A waitress and an author – both married – start seeing each other one holiday and soon their marriages begin to take strain and someone gets killed. At least if you remain single for the rest of your life, you won’t have to deal with the pain of a divorce. Bonus!

5. Shameless (US)

Seriously your breakup could be worse... at least you’re not one of the six Gallagher kids trying to deal with an alcoholic dad, no money and no role models in sight. This is one messed up family and your problems will fade away as you join the Gallaghers in their daily hustle to put food on the table – and still have a little fun.

6. Game of Thrones

The best way to pretend your break up didn’t happen is to lose yourself in fantasy. And what better way than bingeing all five season of Game of Thrones in preparation for season 6, coming to ShowMax at the end of August? Sure your break up cuts deep, but at least you don’t have winter, white walkers or backstabbing frenemies trying to murder you at every turn.
