Sony goes MAX

Half naked men, Brandon AND Brenda, Japanese madness, action and movies. The brand new Sony Max channel on DStv is live and airing and Thinus Ferreira looks at what viewers will be able to find on the new channel.

CMLL Presents: Arena Mexico
Karamba! Ole, amigos. If you've seen Jack Black in Nacho Libre wrestling with an outrageous hoodie you'll know exactly what this kind of sport is all about: half naked men wrestling and lunging with masks on. It's much more jumpy and on the fly (literally) than American wrestling and the professional wrestlers known as ''luchadores'' strut around in flamboyant, spectacular and over-the-top wrestling sequences that makes you shake your head, although you can't look away. It's spectacular and it's on Thursdays at 21:00.

Call Me Fitz
Brenda's brother has gone all bad. But that's a good thing. Brandon Walsh is back and this time the former Beverly Hills 90210 heartthrob Jason Priestley is playing a used car salesman with dubious morals. Call Me Fitz is a Canadian drama that revolves around Richard ''Fitz'' Fitzpatrick, a charismatic car salesman who loves his lady time and indulges in various vices. Then dear Larry (played by Ernie Grunwald) shows up. Larry is Fitz's brain that's not attached to the nether regions. It's a deliciously dark satirical comedy-drama with edge and it's on Tuesdays at 21:00.

Scare Tactics
So Brenda lost her virginity to Dylan on prom night but that's not why she's a bad girl. It's because she's scaring people. Shannen Doherty is joining her former Beverly Hills 90210 TV brother on Sony Max in this creepy show. Unsuspecting people are lured into very scary situations with the ''help'' of their friends, special effects and actors who all conspire to create hidden-camera fearful pranks. You yourself might want to invest in a pack of adult diapers. Just in case. It's scaaa-ry and it's on weekdays at 20:30.

Takeshi's Castle
This is like an ant farm. Only better. Watch hordes of little things run around like crazy while you look on from your superior position on your couch and laugh at the imbeciles in their little world trying to do the impossible. This TV bubblegum has hapless contestants trying to storm Takeshi's Castle. Numerous kinda-impossible hurdles and ridiculous challenges on the obstacle course wait. Humiliating wipeouts and unbelievable bodily destruction (nobody actually dies) are up ahead. It's a choking hazard and you shouldn't be eating and while watching this. Weekdays at 18:30 and 19:00.

Ninja Warrior
Comedy, sports and reality combine in an amalgam of utter madness. Japanese athletes battle each other and an obstacle course that must have been designed when Mister Miagi turned evil or something. Impossible! Like wannabe Power Rangers they run, jump, crawl and cringe with pain all valiantly trying to make it through and be named ''Ninja Warrior''. You'll get a workout too. The laughing and pointing at other people's misery will result in strong abs. This devastating TV delight is on weekdays at 19:30 and 21:00.

Movies
Sony Max is made for men so look out for movies that are loud and laddish. Movies will premiere on Sony Max on Mondays at 21:00 and on Saturdays at 20:30. February movies include Street Smart (21 Feb) and Michael Valliant (28 Feb) and March has Taxi 4 (14 March) and District 13 (21 March). Other upcoming movies include Jackass, Shaolin Temple, Congo and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Award shows
It seems as if Sony Max will work some cool once-off special programming into the schedule. In March the new channel will broadcast the Video Game Awards 2010 that took place in Los Angeles in December, the annual awards ceremony honouring the best in video games from game of the year and best character, to best graphics, best shooter and even best game console. It's on Sunday 13 March at 14:30 and Tuesday 29 March at 21:00.

Other shows
Sony Max has other TV dramas like The Shield, Nash Bridges and Street Time, mixed martial arts shows like TKO Major League MMA and sports shows such as Knockout Sportsworld, more of those outrageous reality game shows such as Unbeatable Banzuke and Solitary, and comedy shows like Manswers and Kenny vs Spenny.

Sony Max (DStv 126) starts on Tuesday, 1 February at 21:00.
