TopTV, fight for your right to show porn

2011-12-08 12:25

Channel24 user Francois Oosthuizen thinks stopping TopTV from screening porn is just another nail in the coffin that is our ever-shrinking democracy.

It is so sad to see that there is even a debate around whether TopTV should be allowed to screen hardcore porn channels.

Why is this an issue in the times we live in? Why should we waste our time discussing this non-issue? But alas, it seems that the close-minded individuals who are against hardcore porn channels will not rest until TopTV is throughly disparaged for even contemplating the addition of porn.

If TopTV is not allowed to show porn, then it will be another nail in the coffin that is our ever-shrinking democracy. Each individual should make the conscious choice whether to watch porn or not. We should not be dictated to by satellite companies, regulating bodies, or the government. We have the right to choose what we want to watch.

Here the right-winged, close-minded majority will be quick to point that we have a duty to protect our children against accessing such services. But hasn't TopTV already made it clear that they have put in place several systems to ensure that children are not able to access this content? Using children as an excuse, is thus a moot point.

Naked people in a natural act

Furthermore, if you have a personal moral problem with watching porn, then don't subscribe to TopTV's porn bouquet. If you feel that your whole existence will collapse because you see naked people involved in a completely natural act, then don't watch porn.

But for goodness sakes don't interfere with my right to watch porn. In my opinion, a much more important issue that needs our attention when it comes to the issue of porn channels is whether TopTV plans to include content for heterosexuals, homosexuals, transsexuals, fetishists, etc.

Surely if heterosexuals are allowed to watch hardcore porn on satellite TV, gay people should be allowed the same privilege. I also hope and trust that the content will take all the different races in South Africa into account.

It amazes me that our constitution allows adults to engage in sex and nobody bats an eyelid, but the moment a satellite TV company decides to show people enagaged in sex it becomes a problem. So doing it is ok but watching people do it is not?!? How utterly ridiculous!

It is my sincere hope that TopTV will vehemently fight for their right to show porn. To Mr Govender and his team: I salute you!
