A tearful goodbye to Riaan Cruywagen

Knowing that Riaan has been on television for so many years, I knew the day would come for him to say goodbye.

I also knew (and repeatedly told my family) that it would be a sad day.

Even though I am English speaking, I always preferred to watch the Afrikaans news he presented. I had grown very proud of him as I grew.

I have immense respect for this man and his history of which I am partly part of (even though in a minuscule way) and I will always remember the sense of having something in common in a way that family has because he was always in my living room, bringing the news.

He surprised me in a big way when I got to see another side of him which was fun and quirky in the advertisement for the Loerie Awards in 2011. My family really enjoyed that ad.

Please know that there will not be a dry eye watching your last broadcast and tribute this evening Riaan. South Africa loves you.
