5 things you need to know about the new Top Gear

Cape Town - The brand new season for Top Gear has just premiered in the UK to mixed reviews

South African fans of the show still have one day to go before the motoring show returns to the small screen.

Here’s what you need to know about the new show.

1. About the new show

The show has undergone a major makeover. It will be based in the new-look Top Gear headquarters at the familiar test track. It will be crammed full of fresh twists along with familiar features like the Star in Reasonably Priced car.

2. Meet the new team!

TV and radio presenter and self-confessed petrol head Chris Evans will front the show.

Friends star and fastest ever celebrity around the Top Gear track Matt LeBlanc is his co-host.

The pair will be joined by racing driver Sabine Schmitz, YouTube star Chris Harris, F1 pundit Eddie Jordan and motoring journalist Rory Reid and of course The Stig.

3. Extra Gear

Fans will be treated to an extra half hour of viewing! A spin-off behind-the-scenes show will be screened after each episode. It will be hosted by Rory Reid and will screen exclusive footage, interviews, specially recorded films, and a sneak peek into what goes on when the cameras stop rolling.

4. South Africa makes a cameo!

We reported earlier this year that the Top Gear team filmed scenes right here on our home ground. We can't wait to see exactly what they got up to here.

5. When and where

Season 23 of the world's most widely watched motoring show is exclusive to BBC Brit (DStv 120). The new season premieres on Wednesday, 1 June at 20:00.

A repeat of the Top Gear episode will air at 22:15, with Extra Gear airing straight after at 23:15.
