5 things you quickly need to know about the Great SA Bake Off

Cape Town – 12 local bakers will take to the kitchen to compete for the crown of SA’s first best amateur baker. 

The Great South African Bake Off builds on the success of the hugely popular and award-winning BBC series The Great British Bake Off.

Here are 5 things you need to know about the new show.


A South African location.
A marquee – fitted with fashionable kitchen units
12 contestants
3 challenges per episode
2 judges
2 presenters


Gently stir it all together and sprinkle with a light dusting of tension. Put in the oven, turn the heat right up to high, and bake for one hour. After removing, discard any that have failed to rise.


For 20:00, Tuesday, 6th October, BBC Lifestyle (DStv channel 174).


Shirley Guy is an established chef, baker, food stylist and cookery author with more than thirty years’ experience. Chef Tjaart Walraven has worked as a personal chef to celebrities and is now the Director of Food Template, a consultancy business offering a range of restaurant, hospitality and training services.


Episode 1 is all about cakes – from the signature bake challenge of twelve perfect and identical fruit cupcakes, to the daunting challenge of the mystery technical bake. The final challenge, the showstopper, requires bakers to pull out all the stops to wow the judges with their version of 'An Inside Surprise Chocolate Cake'.
