Cape Town – The nation reacted in shock, anger and in some cases joy upon the news that long running American soapie Days of our Lives will be axed.
tvplus reported that from 20 July the inhabitants of Salem and all their drama will no longer be on our TV screens.
Whether you were a fan or not, it's an end of an era, love them or hate them the Bradys, Hortons, DiMeras and Blacks kept us entertained.
In honour of the years of viewing pleasure it provided we countdown the biggest, WTF storylines.
6. Carly buried alive
This is everyone's worst fear come to life and it kept people glued to the screen. In an attempt to keep her grandnephew away from his mother, Vivian Alamain staged Carly Manning's death. Carly was trapped in the earth in a coffin kitted out with lights, an air tank, and a two-way speaker system which Vivian would use to torture her captive. Just when Carly's oxygen was running out Vivian confessed her awful deed and Carly was rescued.
5. Sami tried to sell her half-sister Belle
Sami Brady took sibling rivalry to the next level. When she found out that Belle was not Roman Brady's child but John Black's she switched the paternity tests. But that wasn’t enough. She wanted to get rid of the baby for good; she kidnapped her and then tried to sell her on the black market. She almost succeeded but John Black rescued the baby just in time.
4. One actress 5 roles!
This was one of the biggest brain twisters ever! When Kristen DiMera (Eileen Davidson) lost her baby, her adoptive dad Stefano DiMera found a woman who looked just like her to carry a child. Enter crazy Susan Banks. The madness didn't stop there though along with Susan came her siblings, nun Mary Moria, brother Thomas and Penelope who was given up for adoption. All of them played by Davidson. Let that one simmer for a bit.
3. Stefano stole John Black's memories and saved it on a disc
If we attempted to explain the entire John Black and Stefona DiMera storylines we'd be here all day. After brainwashing John for the umpteenth time Stefano took all of John's memories and saved it to a disc. Years later John discovered the disc in Stefano's safe but it was stolen from him. Not long thereafter Marlena appeared disc in hand, she told John that it contained all his forgotten memories and that they should unlock the disk and his memories. He didn't want to though, by then he had found love with Ava Vitali who accepted him for who he was. He later destroyed the disc losing all his memories. All those uhm gigs of memories lost just like that.
2. The Salem Stalker and Melaswen Island
The town was being stalked by a masked psychopath who killed off major characters. One death was particularly devastating; Alice Horton was killed via a poisoned doughnut.. Just when we were getting over all those deaths there was a twist. All those characters killed were alive and kicking on the island Melaswen (new Salem). It turns out all of them were swapped with doppelgangers and carted off to the island, a replica of Salem.
1. The possession of Marlena Evans
This storyline goes down as the greatest Days of our Lives moment ever! Stefano up to his old tricks again mind-controlled the good doctor and as a result she was possessed by the devil. Conveniently John Black discovered that he was actually a priest. He then performed an exorcism to save her. Who can forget Marlena's yellow eyes, that menacing voice, the levitating and those evil powers.
