7 hot new TV series to kick off the new year

Cape Town – A new year brings a new set of TV series to add to your favourites.

International hits and local dramas will keep you in suspense and glued to the small screen.

Here are 7 new series you can't miss.

1. Shades Of Blue

What it’s about: A complex police series that centers on Harlee Santos (Jennifer Lopez), a single mother and detective recruited to work undercover for the FBI’s anti-corruption task force.

When: Wednesdays at 20:30 on M-Net (DStv 101).

2. Die Boekklub

What it’s about: This local Afrikaans series, follows the story of Tom Niemandt (Aucamp) as he unexpectedly inherits his grandmother’s guesthouse. Tom is forced to live in the small town for a year and unwillingly becomes part of a local book club filled with interesting characters.

When: Tuesdays at 20:30 on kykNET (DSTV 141).

3. Show Me a Hero

What it’s about: In an America generations removed from the civil rights struggles of the 1960s, the young mayor (Oscar Isaac) of a mid-sized city is faced with a federal court order to build a small number of low-income housing units in the white neighborhoods of his town. His attempt to do so tears the entire city apart, paralyzes the municipal government and, ultimately, destroys the mayor and his political future.

When: Fridays from 14 January at 21:00 on M-Net Edge (Dstv 102).

4. Code Black

What it’s about:  Based on the award winning documentary of the same name. This heart-pounding medical drama centres around Academy Award winner Marcia Gay Harden, as a doctor in one of the country’s most notorious and chaotic emergency rooms.

When: Mondays from 18 January at 21:30 on M-Net (DStv 101).

5. Billions

What it’s about: A high finance drama starring Damian Lewis and Paul Giamatti. The series centres around politics and power in the world of Wall Street and New York investment firms.  

When: Tuesdays from 19 January at 21:00 on M-Net Edge (DStv 102).

6. The X-Files

What it’s about: FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully are back to reprise their iconic  roles in one of television’s  longest-running sci-fi series. The series will encompass a mixture of stand-alone episodes and those that further the original show’s seminal mythology.

When: Monday, 25 January express from the U.S. at 08:15 and Tuesday, 26 January primetime slot at 20:10 on (DStv 125). Read more about the airing schedule here.

7. Rosewood

What it’s about: Morris Chestnut is Dr. Beaumont Rosewood Jr., a private pathologist working in Miami, Florida, in high demand with law enforcement.

When: Tuesdays from 22 February at 20:50 on Universal Channel (DStv 117).
