7 things you should know before the new season of GOT starts

Cape Town – The long wait is finally over – winter is here.

After what seems like forever the much anticipated seventh season of Game of Thrones will finally debut on Monday, 17 July at 03:00 on M-Net (DStv 101).  There will also be a prime-time broadcast at 21:30.

If you haven't had time to rewatch season six, have no fear. We bring you up to speed with this handy seven pointer recap.

1. "You know nothing Jon Snow"

It was a quite a season for Jon Snow. Not only was he resurrected but after a bloody war with Ramsay Bolton he was crowned the King of the North. The biggest revelation though has been his parentage. Through Bran's final vision we learn that Lyanna Stark is his mom.

2. From shamed woman to queen

You have to give props to Cersei Lannister. After starting the season out as a shamed woman she ended it on a high note as Queen of the Seven Kingdoms. She blew up the Great Sept of Baelor killing the High Sparrow and wiping out House of Tyrell leaving poor Tommen to jump to his death.

3. The Mother of Dragons continues her journey to the throne

Daenerys Targaryen has gained an alliance on her way back to Westeros. She made a deal with Theon and Yara Greyjoy as well as appointed Tyrion Lannister as Hand of the Queen. She's making her way back to King's Landing with a bunch of ships and an army.

4. The vengeful Stark

It's been quite a journey for Arya Stark. After starting out the series blind and training as a Faceless Man she ditched Jaqen and reclaimed her name. She is making her way back home and ticking off names on her kill list. She served Walder Frey his sons in a pie and then slit his throat.

5. Lady of Winterfell

Sansa Stark delivered one of the most satisfying deaths in the series when she set Ramsey's own dogs loose on him. Jon promised her that she would be Lady of Winterfell but after he was crowned King of the North Sansa wasn't too thrilled. It was after all because of her that Jon won the Battle of the Bastards with the help of Littlefinger's troops.

6. The new Three Eyed-Raven

After the Three-Eyed Raven was killed by The Night King, Bran has now taken on his mantle. Bran also lost his protector Hodor in one of the series' most dramatic deaths. #RIPHodor

7. The big battle is about to begin

Even though we've only caught glimpses of the White Walkers in the past, the new season promises to put them at the centre of everything.
