Johannesburg - Idols SA is heading back to the eighties this week with special guest star Jennifer Rush! Jennifer Rush’s 1985 single The Power of Love was a massive hit in Australia, Ireland, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, and of course here in South Africa, and in England it was the best-selling single by a female solo artist in the history of the British music industry.
This Sunday, 4 October, Miss Rush will perform her international mega-hit in person on the Idols SA stage at the State Theatre in Pretoria with the Idols SA Season 11 Top 9, and she will also perform another one of her greatest hits, the 1984’s Ring of Ice. The Top 9 Idols will all be working hard this week to perfect their own eighties hits but, one contestant will be sent home before the end of Sunday’s show. Here are the songs that the contestants are rehearsing this week:
Amanda Antony (22) from Port Elizabeth went with a local hit, the 1980 anthem Paradise Road, by Joy. Dineo Moseki (21) from Vryburg picked the Bryan Adams ballad Heaven, from his 1984 album Reckless. 22-year-old Elwira Standili from Worcester plans to show off her rocker side with Tina Turner’s 1985 hit We Don’t Need Another Hero, from the movie Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Karabo Mogane (24) from Nelspruit has chosen the classic 1985 hit Last Christmas from the pop duo Wham. 16-year-old Loyiso Gijana from Uitenhage hits a cheerful note with Bobby McFerrin’s jaunty 1986 hit Don’t Worry Be Happy. Lungisa Xhamela (24) from Langa is bringing a fresh interpretation to one of eighties icon Cindy Lauper’s all-time greatest hits, 1983’s Time After Time. Mmatema Moremi (23) from Limpopo is also sticking to 'local is lekker' with Brenda Fassie’s 1986 classic, Weekend Special.
Rhema Varrie (21) from Alberton will bring back memories with Simply Red’s Grammy-winning 1989 ballad, If You Don’t Know Me By Now. And Siphelele Ngcobo (24) from Inanda went for true eighties magic with some Lionel Richie: the Oscar-winning 1985 hit Say You, Say Me, from the movie White Nights.
