ANCYL calls Gareth Cliff a madman

2011-06-08 14:45
Sydney Masinga
Polokwane - The ANC Youth League (ANCYL) in Limpopo is calling for the organisers of M-Net's talent search programme Idols to remove the show's judge, Gareth Cliff.

This follows weekend media reports that Cliff, also a 5FM DJ, labelled Limpopo youth as talentless.

"The people in Polokwane are charming, but not talented. There is one person from 'Poloks' among the finalists, all that driving and stuff - never again," Cliff was quoted as saying, following the Idols auditions that were held in Polokwane in February.

"The organisers of the event must distance themselves from Mr Cliff's madness and release him from the panel of judges. The youth must not be defocused and demoralised by Mr Cliff and others like him," said ANCYL provincial secretary Jacob Lebogo.

"The future of young aspiring artists lies in the lazy hands of a madman."

Leading actors

Lebogo said that what started out as a good initiative to expose talented young people in Limpopo was losing credibility "due to the rants of one discriminating lunatic".

He argued that people from Limpopo excelled in all fields.

"We have produced the legendary Noria Mabasa, Colbert Sokwebo, Selaelo Selota, Peter Teanett, Paul Ndlovu, Judith Sephuma and Mohlagase, among many," said Lebogo.

He said South Africa's leading actors were from Limpopo and that the world’s gold medallist middle-distance runner Caster Semenya came from the province.

Without response

"The sitting Miss South Africa is from Limpopo. The greatest footballers of this country were groomed on the dusty sports fields of Limpopo. We have produced award-winning DJs," he said.

Attempts to get comment from the organisers of Idols SA were unsuccessful on Wednesday as calls to M-Net were transferred from one office to the other without a response.

When contacted for comment, a 5FM employee who declined to give his name, refused to provide African Eye News Service with Cliff's contact numbers.

    Sad Puppies.

      Risen Ape - 2011-06-08 15:05

Aha this is much better, this is what the ANCYL is supposed to be doing, making childish comments that kiddies find important. Leave the politics to grownups.

      JuluisMalema - 2011-06-08 15:37

If he is a mad man. What do we Call Julius Malema? A Nincompoop and a Retard, I think that actually suits Julius aka Retarded Nincompoop....

      Knorpantoffel - 2011-06-08 16:17

Limpopo also has the lowest matric pass rate of all provinces in SA

      za101 - 2011-06-08 16:46

i hoped malema camme and sung at idols

      Kaaiman - 2011-06-08 16:47

What a pudding face! Is it just me or is Cliffie getting really fat? - 2011-06-08 16:50

Oh my word....!!! What a PATHETIC bunch of TALENTLESS IDIOTS ancyl are......!!! Proof that they have nothing better to do than 'spout forth'!!!!

      Squeegee Pilot - 2011-06-08 20:13

We should maybe take them seriously. After all, who knows mad men better than Malaema's supporters? They work in an asylem listening to a raving idiot all day long.

      Francois - 2011-06-08 20:33

I must admit that I never heard of any of these great artists - it is not like they are in the league of Mandoza. Is the sitting Miss South Africa sitting on the ANCYL's presidential staff or where is she sitting? Was it not meant to be the "incumbent"? Then if "Idols" is the only way for Limpopo youth out of the conundrum, I think they must try maths or accountancy or soccer as well, not that these are sport, but at least it is an easier way out. It is easier to be an average engineer than a hit singer or a member of the presidential staff - well on the latter it is nowadays more easy - huh Janeekob Zuma?

      Warren - 2011-06-08 21:04

Isn't Mara Louw the leader of the ANCYL in Limpoepol???

      Ayoba - 2011-06-09 12:54

Don't just attach the ANCYL just b'cos you hate them. They did not say anything about race. They are just protecting the youth in the province from people that dont respect people's feelings.Remember there are whites in Polokwane. Gareth need to be matured and stop calling people talentless. To call people in a province talentless is immature at all standards. I wonder if He is talented. Never heard him singing before.

      mal.emmer - 2011-06-09 13:52

Oh what would you do if I sung out of tune, would you get up and walk out on me... Bob "Limp Oupo" Dylan

      ir8m8 - 2011-06-09 14:43

all this ranting and raving over what is historically a very K@K Show...

      Nikki-J89 - 2011-06-09 15:21

It is i mean come on .. its idols... theyre like kids fighting over a toy

      Ayoba - 2011-06-09 17:11

Judging by most comments, if Gareth says people are talentless He becomes a Hero. If it was Juju who said it, then everybody would be on his neck. Hmm! Put thumbs down if you like my comment.

      chappy - 2011-06-09 17:20

Wow... sense of humor failure.... henceforth the ANCYL will add to it's plans for SA's future that sattire and comedy are the agents of apartheid and must be banned... idiots.

      ProMalema100 - 2011-06-10 10:59

@USSA..people who speak their mind are not welcomed in SA, Malema for instance, Gareth has a democratic right to voice his views. South Africans are not open to people voicing the truth, if it is not inline with their own views, White people hate Julius Malema becuase he fights for Black people's rights to be addressed first on the other hand people like Gareth Cliff and that other white musician together with Afriforum, fights for the minority rights. I do not a problem if an individual feels that representing his people is what he/she wants to do. South Africans claim to be a diverse nation and the only ones they are fooling are themselves. What happened to freedom of speech, I have much respect for the late Eugine Terreblache because he stood and fought for what he beleived in. We all knew him as the AWB leader he was. I hate two faced people because they try and please everyone and end up not achieving anything at the end of the day, Like President Zuma for instance, look at the state of affairs with him, he promissed everyone the world and never delivered to anyone. I prefer someone who promisses certain people and make it clear to the rest that, please do not expect anything from me as I was honest and upfront about where my loyalties lie.

      USSA - 2011-06-10 15:39

@PROMalema Malema does everything for personal gain. He represents no one. Please tell me if the poor people he "represents" have been issued their Breitling watches yet... Malema is a greedy little $hit-stirrer, and his agenda is clearly self-enrichment and fame, NOT common prosperity.

      degenerate - 2011-08-05 14:17

@mal.emmer You are quoting the Beatles and not Bob Dylan.

  • customdesign - 2011-06-08 14:55

So in other words he is not entitled to an opinion?

      JuluisMalema - 2011-06-08 15:41

If he is a mad man. What do we Call Julius Malema? A Nincompoop and a Retard, I think that actually suits Julius aka Retarded Nincompoop....

      Howzitekse - 2011-06-09 03:46

The South African craze - everything must have a label, or be colour coded. Backward.

      onetickie - 2011-06-09 06:38

Maybe the jARSE tried out for Idols and didn't get thru so its just sour grapes. We've all had the misfortune of hearing him sing "shoot the boer" and so we all know he cannot sing. He obviously can't take rejection and its mortified him that his trial for Idols didn't succeed :)

  • Marieta - 2011-06-08 14:57

Oh please get a life ANCYL!!

      Kevin - 2011-06-09 13:54

  • saywhat - 2011-06-08 15:02

doesn’t the ANCYL have anything better to do? Is Gareth not entitled to his own opinion?

They can't win in politics now they try their luck @ music

      Jay - 2011-06-08 15:46

"We have produced the legendary Noria Mabasa, Colbert Sokwebo, Selaelo Selota, Peter Teanett, Paul Ndlovu, Judith Sephuma and Mohlagase, among many," said Lebogo. WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?!?!?

      Gallows - 2011-06-08 15:22

      My thoughts exactly.

      Valis - 2011-06-08 15:24

Agree. Never heard of any of them.

      Matt - 2011-06-08 15:35

Yeah, it's like when you get a magazine like YOU (if you really have to, personally I just can't bring myself to pay for it) and they have photos of celebrities, and all you can think is "who are they?" and yet they're "big stars"...

      gobsmacked2 - 2011-06-08 15:37

Hahaha, I was wondering exactly the same thing! Hilarious!

      harry1 - 2011-06-08 15:38

They are talented artists. You'll do yourself a favour by listening to Judith Sephuma's songs and the poetic lyrics (it is mostly English). Then again Krutch, who is Gê Korsten and whatsisname...uh... Nohair Bridges?

      Ozymandios - 2011-06-08 16:02

The dusty lot from Ploloks, thats who they are. After 17 years I guess I too just missed out on what great people Poloks and the ANCYL can produce. I can't say they have ever, as far as I know, adorned the front pages of the Cape Times as much as Juliarse Dilema has.

      grs911 - 2011-06-08 16:20

"Noria Mabasa, Colbert Sokwebo, Selaelo Selota, Peter Teanett, Paul Ndlovu, Judith Sephuma and Mohlagase" are all world-acclaimed rock-scientists and brain-surgeons !

      supporter - 2011-06-08 16:55

where are they from? space???? a legend is somebody like the late PRINCESS DIANA FROM WALES. stupid idiots these ancyl people. but who can blame them, look at the leader LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      SPECTATOR - 2011-06-08 19:00

maybe they are the latest limpopo government tender winning billionaires

      Danief` - 2011-06-09 08:05

Try to Google this people. No responses.

      one-way - 2011-06-09 09:13

Hell Krush , get with it man. These guys can be found at any Super Sangommas Cocktail Party, sipping the latest muti body part cocktail from a steaming calabash. Building sturdy Bridges over the Great Race Tenders and plotting Overthrows, underhand deals and causing casual mayhem. Ambassadors for Limpopo they are. An example to the youth, fine people, famous people.

      Lab-Rat - 2011-06-09 09:35

Yeah, they can't be that legendary if nobody has ever heard of them.

      Cire - 2011-06-09 11:18

Never heard of any of Lebogo's list - never will either!

      Kevin - 2011-06-09 13:58

What are they? Never heard of them

      AdamC - 2011-06-09 16:16

Its cos these are only their stage names to protect their privacy from the paparazzi that hunt them down!!! Its the curse of fame!!!

      simodi - 2011-06-10 10:03

Typical of a white stupid idiot ask Steve Hofmeyer,he will update u.

      shmangle - 2011-06-10 12:58

Simodi - I'm not saying those people aren't talented, they may very well be, but you can't call someone legendary when more than half the people in the country couldn't tell you who they are. Michael Jackson - even though he was a complete freak, is a legend, not Colbert "never heard of you" Sokwebo.

  • Skiballas - 2011-06-08 15:04

We shuld start a show called Political Idols...but we will skip Polokwane, seen as they already proved their is no talent :-)

  • WTFnow - 2011-06-08 15:05

ANCYL wow, It obvious Gareth Cliff is on the show for that very reason. His blatant honesty. what must he do if there is no talent in Poloks.then again ANCYL has chosen Malema as its president so stupid remarks like these are probably forthcoming.

      Kevin - 2011-06-09 14:01

Hope you realize the ANC YL will not like Gareth as they have never been able to deal with the truth

  • Rob - 2011-06-08 15:05

  • Ken - 2011-06-08 15:05

Noria Mabasa, Colbert Sokwebo, Selaelo Selota, Peter Teanett, Paul Ndlovu, Judith Sephuma and Mohlagase? Sorry, never heard of any of them.

      Yoni - 2011-06-08 21:24

      Judith Sepuma is well-known.

      Esperanza - 2011-06-09 07:46

Judith Sephuma is a popular jazz singer who is never pictured out at clubs making a fool of herself, unlike the other "celebrities" in this country... I suppose she uses her time writing awesome songs instead

      Kevin - 2011-06-09 14:01

  • Spade - 2011-06-08 15:06

"due to the rants of one discriminating lunatic" sounds like he is talking about his own ANCYL president. If the criteria is to fire people who rant like discriminating lunatics, then I agree - Cliff must go. And so should Malema too.

      gobsmacked2 - 2011-06-08 15:41

Almost.. except that one you mention is always discriminating but indiscriminately, depending on his target of the day. So does that make him an indiscriminate discriminator or just a good old fashioned hypocritical twat?

  • Spykerr-ZN - 2011-06-08 15:07

O ja , that would be freedom of speech? Or are there only certain ppl who are allowed to make use of freedom of speech? All are equal , but some are more equal that others LOL. Besides that , i am sure he does not mean that.

  • - 2011-06-08 15:07

When a person gives an opinion that does not marry view the views of the ruling party they are either branded a racist or mad/crazy. Instead of shooting the messenger, maybe they should address the issues in the province.

Very funny. They will do the normal ANC thing and "Demand" someone get in the top 10. Maybe Gareth should ask him to stump up and join him on the judging panel if he's such a connoisseur of musical talent. To Jacques above... do you know any jokes that are funny or at least a little clever?

  • theprodigy - 2011-06-08 15:16

  • thumper - 2011-06-08 15:18

He's a judge voicing his opinion on the lack of talent that entered the competition. If thats wrong then everyone who was ridiculed and told they have no talent has a case against idols or any competition forthat matter. The fact is - not one SA Idol winner has achieved much anyway, never mind the 99% untalented, tone deaf idiots that believe they can sing and act astonished when they are told they are rubbish. ANCYL is a bunch of talentless, uneducated political wannabes!

  • Monsterz - 2011-06-08 15:18

Awesome tell it like it is !!! Idols is a show created to identify, and encourage development of talent. I agree there isnt much in Polokwane, not now, and even when it was called Pietersburg there was no talent either. Its a cultural nonentity !!!! Limpopo, the home of the G for woodwork, Malema, why did t he get someone to sing shoot the boer at Idols...

  • Realist - 2011-06-08 15:19

All of the Idols judges have been extremely honest and critical, as their jobs require, of ALL contestants, whichever province it may be. The ANCYL have no say, or power over M-Net, it is the viewers, so they can piss off!

  • Vanessa M - 2011-06-08 15:21

Gareth Cliff irritates me too, but help me here: so it's ok for the ANCYL to diss the whities, but it's not ok for Gareth Cliff to call the people of Limpopo talentless? The ANCYL need to get over themselves. Thank goodness no one takes them seriously.

  • FerretGee - 2011-06-08 15:23

Um, Dear Jacob Lebogo, Clearly you don't know that Idols has THREE judges and one "celebrity" judge. Cliff does not have the final say at the auditions, the contestant has to get three "yes's" to get to the next round. It's nit Cliff's fault that there was only one talented singer who chose to audition in the whole of Polokwane! You just have to laugh at the ANCYL!

  • Gypseyrider - 2011-06-08 15:23

Go you good thing Gareth, - harmless comment like that & the racists are up in arms. Malema continually blurts out powerful hate speech which has ongoing violent repercussions. Makes the stomach turn to think how narrowminded & sightless those in power actually are..

  • Baas-Julius - 2011-06-08 15:24

Hahahahahah , If Gareth is a mad man ! wonder what is JUlias

  • Ian - 2011-06-08 15:27

Every time, the ANCYL is happy to live up to everyones expectations of saying something stupid. It REALLY doesn't matter if you nurtured the entire cast of "The Kings Speech", fathered the entire Barcelona football team and have some hermaphro-what-whats - That doesn't entitle you to claim you can sing as a pop-star. I can't either, but I'm cool with that.

  • tammy.wattsclaassen1 - 2011-06-08 15:27

please all the judges from Idols are full of nonses. i have never heard any one complain about what Randle says and tha attitude that he has, we need to except Gareths attitude and personality because that is what Gareth is like. all the judges are full of it. and so are alot of other people. maybe we need to hear from the veiwers and ask what they thought of the Polokwane interviews.

  • Niekie - 2011-06-08 15:28

The ancyl can make statements like that because they all about madmen! The leader of the ancyl is one! And he didn't even pass matric! Ha Ha!

  • Daniel Steyn - 2011-06-08 15:29

Last time I checked there where 4 judges to pick talent. If there was any talent, surely the other 3 would have cast a majority vote... but alas only one golden ticket. Maybe, just Maybe Gareth was right. Long live freedom of speech. PS: Maybe Polokwane should form their own Republic and build a wall around their dis-illusions.

I have no idea what mandate the ANCYL thinks it has that it must comment about someone in the media - but I do agree. Gareth Cliff is obnoxious and nasty. I specifically avoid 5FM just in case he's on.

      Lab-Rat - 2011-06-09 15:02
