Afrikaans reality cooking show brewing

Cape Town – kykNET (DStv channel 144) is in production on a brand new local reality cooking competition entitled Kokkedoor 2013 which will be broadcast on the Afrikaans satellite channel from April 2013 and is now looking for contestants.

The reality cooking competition, produced by Homebrew Films in Cape Town, will build recipes and challenges around so-called Afrikaans "legacy foods" – or nostalgic meals: classic Afrikaans dishes, updated but still relying on the original taste and history of the meal.

Although contestants are racing against the clock, these foods and recipes which contestants will remember eating as it was made by grandmothers, aunts and mothers, take some time to actually prepare.

No rush-rush here as patience is part of the virtue to winning Kokkedoor 2013 with things like Tant Rika se Vetkoek, Jan Tuisbly se Poeding, Tokkie se Pampoenkoekies or Die Hartseer Tert.

The 13-episode Kokkedoor 2013 is searching for the best amateur chefs from all over South Africa's Afrikaans countryside known as  the “platteland”, who will cook it out in the iconic platteland dorpie of Prince Albert.

Judges

Kokkedoor 2013's two judges are Hetta van Deventer-Terblanche, the historical food chef on the side of the traditional chefs, and chef Nic van Wyk, the well-known chef and restaurant owner who will be on the side of contestants with more experience.

Both will choose their own group of 10 contestants who will battle the pots and pans and history in Prince Albert.

Would-be contestants have to write an essay of between 600 and 1000 words on why they want to enter Kokkedoor 2013.

Contestants then have to compile the menu for one Sunday lunch and send in a photo of themselves. For more information, email kokkedoor@mnet.co.za or call Paul Venter at 021 422 3452.
