Cape Town - Scotty McCreery is the new American Idol.
The 17-year-old country crooner was crowned the winner at Thursday's finale.
McCreery beat 16-year-old Lauren Alaina to take the title and the prize of a recording contract.
After the result was announced, McCreery exclaimed "I never in my wildest dreams, I've got to thank the Lord first... he got me here."
The finale screened live in South Africa on M-Net on Thursday. A repeat of the finale will air on the channel on Sunday May 29 at 16:00.
