Babies and blunders in MasterChef SA

Cape Town - Thys Hattingh's sweet MasterChef SA dreams are over.

The 29-year-old bookkeeper was eliminated from the competition after inadequately preparing a cold-smoked swordfish dish in Zanzibar.

In the latest episode of the reality cooking competition, the remaining eight contestants went to Zanzibar to compete in team challenges.

The cooks were divided into two teams: Ilse, Lungi, Manisha and Khaya made up the red team while Deena, Thys, Sue-Ann and Sarel comprised the blue team.

While the red team were shopping at the food market, Khaya became queasy and revealed to her teammates she is pregnant.

The challenge was to source, prepare and sell fresh meals at the famous Forodhani Gardens night market and the winning team would be the one who made the most profit.

The all-girl red team won the challenge, leaving the blue team to face off in a spice identification test.

Cloves, not cardamom

When Deena and Thys both incorrectly identified cloves, they were tasked with an intricate pressure test.

Head chef of Essque Zalu, Jussi Husa, showed Thys and Deena a cured and lightly smoked swordfish belly with a fresh palm heart and green papaya salad, served with squid ink aoli and crispy seaweed. The challenge was then to recreate the dish.

Thys's offering was overcooked while Deena's was over-smoked, but in the end, Thys was sent back to his hometown of Rustenburg.

Critical acclaim

Food24 editor Caro de Waal has said in recent weeks the show has improved dramatically, and referred to this episode as "absolutely beautiful".

She is however sad to see Thys leave because according to her, "he rocked it!"

MasterChef SA airs on Tuesdays at 19:30 on M-Net and M-Net HD.
