Cape Town – Gather your dragons. And your blankey. While things keep getting worse in Westeros, it keeps getting better for M-Net: the South African pay-TV broadcaster will be broadcasting the upcoming new 5th season of Game of Thrones at exactly the same time as in the United States on M-Net Edge (DStv 102) from 12 April.
When the 5th season of Game of Thrones kicks off in America on Sunday night 12 April at 21:00, DStv subscribers will be able to watch it at 03:00 in the morning, South African time, on DStv Edge.
The 5th season's 10 episodes will unspool – dragons and all – from Monday 13 April at 03:00 so that South African viewers can partake in real-time in online comments and social media interactions and mini-reviews.
The same Game of Thrones episode will be broadcast on Thursdays, from 16 April, on M-Net Edge in at 21:00.
"This is a first for scripted international series," says Yolisa Phahle, M-Net's CEO for South Africa.
"It is further testament to our commitment to ensuring our audiences get the best viewing experience possible.
"It is important for M-Net to remain at the forefront of the latest broadcast and technology trends and we're very proud of this new turbo-charged 'Express from the US'.
"In the fast-paced digital age, our viewers have become global citizens who want instant access to the best programming. With simulcasts like these, we can bring their favourite shows to them in high-quality high-definition (HD)."
"We are delighted that HBO sees us as a partner in their endeavour to use technology to serve audiences better," says Phahle.
"Our state of the art broadcasting facility will allow us to screen this fantastic show in real time and we look forward to similar arrangements in the future."
Before the start of the 5th season of Game of Thrones, M-Net will show the half hour TV special, A Day in the Life, going behind-the-scenes with the cast and crew. The special chronicles a single day of filming of Game of Thrones across three countries – Croatia, Ireland and Spain.
A Day in the Life will be broadcast on Thursday 9 April at 21:00 on M-Net Edge.
