Khoth’ ekhothayo is a 3-D animation project featuring some of South Africa’s most colourful pop-culture characters: the infamous skhothanes.
Created by Soweto- and Joburg-based 3-D designers Linton and; Mell, the team has created two vibrant skhothanes in floral shirts and Carvelas.
The artists wanted to create characters who were easily recognisable and quintessentially South African.
They partnered with Nkululeko Cekiso, a fellow animator and part-time beat maker, to create a series of audio samples to accompany the visuals. Sampling House, hip-hop, kwaito and ravelike synth, the music helps to complete the picture.
They are working on making the individual art pieces into a skit following the lives of the custard-bathing money burners, who remain a definitive part of the Joburg image
