Church to boycott TopTV over porn

2011-12-09 08:19
Neels Jackson
Pretoria - The Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) launched a scathing attack on TopTV's "deception and lack of integrity" due to the channel's plan to start broadcasting pornography.

Isak Burger, president of the AFM, is threatening a nationwide boycott campaign along with other churches against TopTV and its advertisers if the plan goes ahead.

Burger said in a statement that Vino Govender, CEO of On Digital Media which runs TopTV, made it clear at last year's TopTV launch that they operate their business according to strict Christian ethics codes.

He promised that they would not start broadcasting pornography and said they "do not want to poison the minds of millions of South African children".

What one can now conclude is that the poisoning of millions of children's minds has now become acceptable business practice for TopTV, the statement said.

'The new crack'

Burger said this is proof that pornography in any medium is devastating for a community. Men and teens get so addicted to it that it has been described as "the new crack".

Men who compulsively watch porn struggle to have normal sexual relations with their wives. This leads to marital problems and divorce. Family breakdowns are a major contributing factor to crime, violence and other social problems in South Africa.

Burger has called on the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) to reject TopTV's application.

Tatho Mahapa of TopTV maintains that the protection of children is of upmost importance to them.

TopTV is aware of religious objections against adult content, but is also aware of requests for it.

After careful consideration of research reports they decided to make it available as a separate, stand-alone option.

People who do not want it, will therefore not have access to it.

According to TopTV it is not a solution to simply not deliver the content, because the demand for it will not go away.

There is nothing in the bible against pornography. "Men who compulsively watch porn struggle to have normal sexual relations with their wives. This leads to marital problems and divorce. Family breakdowns are a major contributing factor to crime, violence and other social problems in South Africa." This statement is the biggest load of bull I have ever encountered. Where is the research? Europe, and specifically Holland has a liberal view on sexuality, with children often exposed to sex toys displayed on windows and yet their stats on all the things mentioned is one of the lowest in the world. In fact, countries with liberal sexual views tend to have less violent and abusive populations.

      Trevor - 2011-12-09 08:38

where are your stats - let's see the figures. And make them proper stats with proper context. Personally, the rate that porn is proliferating gives rise to even more of a human trafficking market where women are forced into actions as sex slaves for this 'entertainment' industry. So, marriage, family break-up etc might be one serious aspect, but human trafficking and sex slavery is quite another, far more concerning issue.

      Len - 2011-12-09 08:51

I have no stats because I made no claim. It is gnerally accepted that if you make a claim, it is incumbant on you to support your claim. Again, you are free to provide a link to sex slaves versus pornography. Thing is, sex slavery exists even where there is no pornography channels, and so am not really sure how having a pornography channel will lead to sex slavery, but you are free to provide the link. The issues you mention are concerning indeed, but are they caused by pornography channels? South Africa has no pornography channel and yet all these things happen here.

      Rainbow - 2011-12-09 09:13

      This is Africa not europe.

      Len - 2011-12-09 09:19

@rainbownation. The statement said "Men who compulsively watch porn struggle to have normal sexual relations with their wives." It does not distinguish on the basis of nationality ot even race. It simply says men are so out of control when they watch porn, which is a bunch of huey, in my opinion.

      noble.beverley - 2011-12-09 09:21

Len which bible are you reading? "Col 3:5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry." There are many references in the bible against sexual immorality.

      Kobus - 2011-12-09 09:29

1 Thess 3 For this is God’s will: that you become holy, that you keep away from sexual immorality, 4 that each of you know how to possess his own body in holiness and honor, note 5 not in lustful passion like the Gentiles who do not know God.

      Len - 2011-12-09 09:31

@noble beverley. I am not talking about sexual immorality, rather against pornography. Pornography being a sexual immorality is your opinion, which I do not share. I am sure if the bible had clearly stated pornography as a crime, I would not be debating this with you. BTW, the bible has a lot of other prescriptions including how to build a tent. I suggest AFM members probably violate 99% of them 99% of the time

      Randomhero6661 - 2011-12-09 09:38

I say go ahead with the porn channel, why should the church appose it mmm? are their views for everyone and those who don't believe damned? Honestly GTFO...

      Don - 2011-12-09 09:58

see my reply in the general comments, you are wrong to claim that there in nothin in the Bible aganst pornography. It is all over the Bible New and Old Testaments, read them, read about immoral and lustful thoughts and acts. Hope you change your mind.

      Len - 2011-12-09 10:19

@Marco. Again, the verses you quote do not define pornography as immoral. You have made the decision yourself that pornography is sexual morality. The bible clearly says do not "kill". I do not have to assume what it means, it clearly describes what kill entails. nowhere in the bible is there a sin of watching a television program of naked people doing what comes naturally. Yet, the bible is full of other vivid verses. The story below details how the Lord encouraged the abuse of a non-consenting woman in order to punish someone who masterbated. e.g. "And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him. And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother. And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also." (Genesis 38:7-10)

      Hans - 2011-12-09 10:30

What about women who watch porn? Do they have normal relations. Men love women who love porn, now that is a healthy relationship. Why don't the churches stop supporting the ANC government because they support corruption, racism etc.

      noble.beverley - 2011-12-09 10:39

@Len what does sexual immorality mean OH please define it...@Ibhubesi you said it its an open forum and I can say what I want, when I want and I am a married woman with three daughters and very afraid that one of my beautiful princess will be exposed to a perverted sicko like yourself that spends his time ogling man and woman that is turning something beautiful into something filthy as clearly he is too lazy find a partner to experience what you have created as a purpose to bring forth children, express intimacy, provide comfort, with our spouses...go tell that to children that are left orphaned by people practising unsafe sex because they put their sexual desires before their children and their wifes because they prefered to advise people to take Disprin instead of admitting what is wrong is wrong.

      Len - 2011-12-09 10:51

@noble.beverley. I do not know what it means, noble.beverly. I never claimed to know what it means. If I were a guessing men, I would say a priest having sexual intercourse with a minor is sexual immorality. I would say that while rape is accepted as violence against the victim, it does also fit sexual immorality. It is a definition that I accept without someone pointing it out to me. If I were to say to you that having sex with your husband in any place in your house other than the bedroom was sexual immorality, would you summarily agree with me, even if your ethics do not define it as such? What if a man decides that women wearing pants is sexual immorality, would you agree even if to you that is a bunch of malachy? As for your daughters, I suspect they have access to the internet, may have their smartphones (smut phones) and read the bible. Aren’t you worried that they will be exposed to similar immorality in the internet, smartphones or bible? I do not have children as I felt I was not ready to raise them. Should then your 3 beautiful daughters dictate to me how I live. Have you taught your children wrong from right? If so, are you worried they do not listen to you?

      noble.beverley - 2011-12-09 11:03

@Len you suspect wrong they do not have access to the internet, thats the problem with you bashers you do selective reading in the bible, the bible is progressive that is why it has two parts the old and new testament, if you study it instead of listening to what you heard then maybe we can talk about it. @Ibhubesi oh please your an orphan really....funny that after your sexual trauma you would be so open about strutting your body in front of any person that wants to see it and looking at men and woman making having sex, people that I know that has gone through such trauma would want to protect others from it, but not you, you really are something special. I guess your mother died from drinking from a cup that an aids carrier used.

      noble.beverley - 2011-12-09 11:10

@Len I suspect you dont have kids because maybe your spending too much time ogling at porn...you do know that you can get a wife to fulfull your desires and enjoy sex for the purpose that it was created for. It is beautiful, I doubt my kids will be interested to dictate anything to a grown man, unless he exposes himself to them, then their father will definately dictate to you as we are not raising porn stars.

      Rainbow - 2011-12-09 11:17

What I meant about my comment this is africa and not europe is that we have an incredibly high child/ woman abuse/ rape rate whilst much of europe doesnt.

      Len - 2011-12-09 11:19

Well, Beverley, that is how you chose to raise your children. I congratulate you for that and I expect that as a moral person who taught your children morality, you have nothing to fear them being exposed to something you taught them to be immoral. Since I am not your daughter and my moral compass different, do you accept that I have a right to determine what turns me on and gets my rocks off? The fact that the bible has “select” portions that are immoral should indeed be a concern. If someone you knew who was preaching morality, but on the side was engaging in immoral actions, would your trust in that person be as unwavering? If the bible does indeed contain areas of immorality, then surely, to use the bible as if it is the final word on morality is wrong, wouldn’t you say? I even grant you the right and choice to follow your religion no matter how imperfect it. I will not dictate to you how to worship, but I ask that you allow me the freedom to make my own moral choices, provided they do not break the country’s laws. If they indeed break the laws of the land, then I will be the first to agree with you. I have studied the bible extensively enough to understand it was written by human beings over a period of time. I understand that it does not have foresight of present day technologies. Unfortunately, that is its limitations. I too Beverley, was sexually abused as a minor and I find it insulting that you dictate to people how they should deal with their experiences.

      Bongani - 2011-12-09 11:20

@Beverley. I think the time has come for you to take your bible and go hit the streets. Len, like a lot of other men, have kids when they are ready. Unlike you and so many others of our nation that just make them and leave them. You obviously don't have a clue what the real world is like in a storm water pipe looking for shelter against the elements. Take your religion to the informal settlements and turn the stones to bread and the toxic water to wine. Isn't that what your book says it can do?????

      Alisha - 2011-12-09 11:34

How predictable these self-serving Christian pastors are. Hey, I suppose they must pay their way in the world and subsidise their 6 bedroom houses, BMW's and Mercs, even if by banging the drum against these immoral sins of God-given flesh. Note, nothing is ever said by these pastors about violent movies and the evil undertones of TV programs flighted for kids like WWF? Nothing gets said about the body-worshipping female members of their congregations who snap up fashion magazines with half naked women on the covers and in cosmetic ads. Nothing gets said about depictions of death, maiming, torture in newspaper headlines and on the news on TV. Live a bit people! Even Jesus stripped off naked and skinny dipped with his disciples. God even got angry when Adam and Eve who clothed themselves in Eden and asked them why they cover themselves. Christianity if full of nudity. Just visit any chapel or church in Europe and and witness the 1000's of murals and paintings of naked mother Mary, cherubs, naked angels, etc. What's all the fuss of late?

      noble.beverley - 2011-12-09 11:56

@Len your comments are way too long it bores me I would rather read the bible in that time, are you serious you studied the bible extensively wow? and you dont realise that the bible is progressive and that we dont live in the old testament days and what the purpose of Jesus being cricified was @Ibhubesi you see not reading once again my bible says , the devil came and tempted Jesus to use his personal power to TURN stones to bread. Jesus refused to follow the devil’s advice, giving as his reason: “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4). You started a movement against abuse, but you condone wow hey that is really admirable, your not living in the real world, if I was raped I doubt I would watch porn to remind me of my experiences you should go to a shelter of abused kids and maybe speak to one of them they want nothing to do with any sexual activity..you are one confused victim you and Len. I will pray for you, I sincerely mean that, enjoy your weekend.

      Len - 2011-12-09 11:59

Dear Beverley I have avoided making judgement calls about your personality as it does not add value to the debate. You are right, I do not have children. However, I really do not care for porn and do not subscribe to TopTV. I trust that every family and household with access to satellite television has people who knows what they want, and how they want. I therefore am opposed to the hypocrites who believe their choices should be rammed into other people’s throats. If you choose to parade naked in your home, power to you. If you choose to swim in the nude, power to you. I will do everything in my power to ensure you retain that right to do what legally pleases you in your home, even if some hypocrite deems it immoral. I see sex differently to how you see it. I do not see it as a baby factory, but something to be enjoyed. If it was not as much fun, it would not be as pleasant. If you see sex as only a means procreating, then you do not know what you are missing and perhaps it is the reason why so many husbands of religious women turn to pornography to imagine what they are denied at home. Lastly, I find it interesting that you seem to see nothing wrong with violence, as per your statement that your husband will “dictate to you.” That sounds hypocritical in my view because the bible clearly legislate against violence. In fact, violence is illegal but pornography is not. Again, I will not lower myself to your level of personal insults.

      Len - 2011-12-09 12:36

If my comments bore you, Beverley, you are free to ignore them. Regardless of what your eyes tell you, I am not forcing you to read them, as I am not forcing you to watch porn if your morality prevents you from doing so. My posts are as long as allowed by News24, otherwise I am sure they would have cut them off. Also, it helps to expound on your point to avoid idiotic hypocrites from misrepresenting your arguments. Unfortunately, this often happens. Also, the length of my writing has nothing to do with the facts being discussed. You have now made attempts to insult me and now avoid dealing with my response to your arguments and chose to debate the length of my postings? I have now deemed you unworthy of respect and will treat any of your respect with the contempt they so deserve. Now, if the bible is progressive (which is not exactly the words I would use to describe the bible), there is an admission that what it preach may have been out of date 2000 years ago. What are the chances that what was written 2000 years ago is already out of date? No need to pray for me, Bev, as that is akin to chanting my name wile masterbating

      iiafrica - 2011-12-09 14:19

go read Romans 6:19, one of so many verses in the bible. your clearly so go visit the book my friend.

      Len - 2011-12-09 14:33

@iiafrica. "I am using an example from everyday life because of your human limitations. Just as you used to offer yourselves as slaves to impurity and to ever-increasing wickedness, so now offer yourselves as slaves to righteousness leading to holiness." Again, where does it say pornography is sexual immorality? It is you who deems pornography, sexual immorality and then apply the verses dealing with sexual immorality

Have you ever been to Holland Len? I have. Watched a child of about 6 to 8 years old viewing the 'goods' on sale which was clearly visible for all to see OUTSIDE the shop. The word pornography might not have been mentioned in the Bible but why do you think the flood happened? Because the people where demoralised.Wonder what word can be used to describe what is happening today on this planet?

  • Fred - 2011-12-09 08:31

Ooooh! Top TV must be so worried. Never mind, most of those guys are sinners and hypocrites so they will be queuing up to watch anyway.

      Len - 2011-12-09 08:39

I suspect most of those who will subscribe are the holier than though AFM hypocrites.

      bridgettegraham - 2011-12-09 08:49

      Fully...

      Hans - 2011-12-09 10:32

They must stop supporting the Catholic Church because so many Catholic priests sodomised little boys. Did they watch porn?

      Phillip - 2011-12-09 10:35

Fred, Wasn't this the crowd that managed to reverse Woolworth's decision not to sell Joy magazine?

      jody.beggs - 2011-12-09 10:39

That's why they're against it , its a problem in there church ! Damn the man , save freedom of choice !

      Fred - 2011-12-09 11:44

@Phillip - could be The most interesting thing about these holier than thou hypocrites is they are quite happy for the most appalling and graphic violence to be depicted but they go ape at the sight of a bare nipple. The will also come in this forum with their depraved morality and defend the immoral activities of Hansie Cronje and Joost v Westhuizen. So I don't need to hear them preach about Christian morality: I've seen it, and it is empty of love for humanity, replaced with sanctimonious idolatry and commitment to dead, dumb superstition.

  • bridgettegraham - 2011-12-09 08:31

Pfft. The solution is perfect, the way TopTV described it - if you don't want it, you won't get it. If you want it, you subscribe to it. I don't understand the religious nuts' objection. Do they fear that they will somehow be too weak to control themselves and prevent themselves from consciously subscribing to this new porn channel and then all hope will be gone? Idiots! Take responsibility for your own lives and don't force it onto companies and external institutions.

      Len - 2011-12-09 08:46

They want to control people and sex is one area where they do it best. Fact is, if you do not want it, do not subscribe. Thing is, many of those that frequent Adult World and will subscribe are most likely going to be people from these conservative churches. If you check the news in the US, it is often these evangelical preachers that are caught with their pants down. Same group of individuals still subjugate women

      bridgettegraham - 2011-12-09 08:52

      Totally agree!

      Fred - 2011-12-09 11:47

If I started a new church with another version of the magic man on the sky and signed up a bunch of suckers to give me a cut of their salaries the last thing I would want is competition for their wallets. As a preacherman I would have a lifestyle to support; new dresses and party hats, or fancy suits, hairdo's, nice cars, etc.

  • Peter - 2011-12-09 08:33

"According to TopTV it is not a solution to simply not deliver the content, because the demand for it will not go away." So whether or not it is moral is not the question? Simply because there is a demand for it? Much the same as there is a demand for drugs, alcohol, illegal firearms? Then of course they say it will be on a separate decoder to keep it away from children! Those children will figure out how to access that decoder before you yourself have figured out how to stop them doing it!

      Len - 2011-12-09 08:44

Surely, we do have choice. If to you it is not moral and I see nothing wrong with it, you are free not to subscribe and I will subscribe. This way, you retain your morality and I continue my debauchery. Why should a few people determine morality for a majority, on an issue of which television programs to watch? There are violent movies, there are horror movies intended to scare people, there are graphic news and now I hear the Department of Transport is making available graphic scenes from accidents to sensitize people about road fatalities. Why is showing pornography such a concern for this church? Alcohol is available to adults and drugs have a high cost to society as there is a direct link to consequences versus your tax contribution. Illegal firearms can be used to commit crimes including rape and murder. I do not have children in my household. So, should I pay because your children do not respect you enough to listen to you?

      bridgettegraham - 2011-12-09 08:48

@Len - well put! We are all in control of our own lives. Why do these little "helpers of god" feel they should control all our lives. We don't all believe in the same crap.

      Phillip - 2011-12-09 09:07

Len I agree why should a few people determine the morality for a majority. On the News 24 poll on this subject only 9% of respondents agreed that is was a good idea. So therefore based upon your statement the majority should prevail and it should not happen.

      Len - 2011-12-09 09:15

@Phillip. I know you spend a lot of time on News24, but this story does not limit itself to those who subscribe to News24. TopTV is available to everyone who is willing to purchase their decoder and accompanying dish. So, if this was only about those who responded to the poll on News24 (a non-scientific poll which only reflects the views of those who took the time to respond), then I would have no problem with you applying your morality on the 9%. Lastly, if only 9% of the people would be interested on TopTV's channel, why have a hernia on it? It would die a natural death anyway, right?

      Ed - 2011-12-09 09:19

Um no Philip...all that it means is that the other % do not have to PURCHASE the separate decoder. it is NOT the same as the toptv decoder, it is totally different. and since when do opinion polls on the net make a huge difference anyway? they are known to be totally inaccurate and misleading seen as most people who feel strongly (usually your religous nuts) will either vote more than once or get their friends to vote. the rst of us dont care a damn...it will not affect my life. FACT: cigarette trafficking is far more dangerous. not only is it the most trafficked thing on the planet, but it is well known that cigarettes are traded for not just weapons, drugs and contraband, but also the most traded commodity for woman and human traffic...hmmm, maybe we should ban cigarette producers instead???

      mressop - 2011-12-09 09:28

You know what? Now that you mentioned it... why exactly ARE drugs illegal? If someone chooses to use them isn't that their baby? To take it up a notch: why is it illegal to kill someone? Is it not upto the individual to protect himself instead of relying on others for protection? Just a thought

      Len - 2011-12-09 09:41

@mressop. Comparing murder to pornography must take the prize because it is rather demented. Now, as to drug, you maybe making an interesting point. Thing is, drugs are often abused by people unable to pay for them. There is a direct link between some petty to serious crimes to drug abuse. Furthermore, drug abuse puts a strain on our medical facility as drug abuse leads to a weakened immune system. Since many drug addicts end up peniless, you and me will end up financing their habit when they seem medical help in public facilities. There is also a direct link between drug abuse and effects on families. I am happy to point you to numerous studies and research which shows the link and its effects. Now, if you can show that men who watch pornography end up being a drain to the state resources, steal to support their addiction and are involved in committing crimes against others (as murder is), then perhaps we can start arguing on facts, rather than innuendo and poor attempts at sarcasm

      Ever - 2011-12-09 10:31

Phillip-9% may have said that it was a "good idea"-but you conveniently don't point out that the much larger number that were not opposed-in total something like 66% were not opposed or in favour of. Clearly you don't trust your own self-control if you are so afraid of an OPTIONAL services that is ENCRYPTED and requires a SEPARATE decoder. It seems fair to say that someone who is in a position to make that choice and pay for it is old enough to watch porn if he or she wants to. And before you get all worked up over children been exposed to this-I hope that none of the kids who belong to the AFM (or should I say, who have no choice to belong since their parents do) have cellphones or Internet access, because what it undeniable is that porn access via these mediums is extremely easy and almost impossible to control. As an atheist, I have no problem with DSTV having religious channels because whatever my personal feelings are about televangelists and their pulpit-thumping money-spinning performances, I have the option not to watch them. At least porn movies are honest in what they are selling.

      Daryn - 2011-12-09 10:47

Illegal firearms are just that ILLEGAL, drugs are ILLEGAL and so is underage drinking, so if you/ your kids are involved in these then I am not sure whether or not they can access YOUR porn subscription is the biggest worry you have. Half the reason I stopped attending church is this mentality, IT'S EVIL AND MUST NOT BE ALLOWED is the mentality adopted when they disapprove of something. People were given the right to choose between good and bad, so let them, you are not the nation's nanny so if it upsets you, turn the other cheek and ignore it. I will not be subscribing, just had more than enough of these religious nutters. Naked news was the last flavour of the month, in a few months after broadcasting, the storm in this teacup will be over as well. Again, if you worried about your kids viewing this, and they are not obedient, you have bigger issues than a channel you need to CHOOSE to pay extra for and subscribe to

  • Johannes - 2011-12-09 08:40

Porn on TV in SA is nothing new. The satellite that transmits it over southern Africa is transmitting it regardless of Top TV. A few years ago I had PSAT (porn tv) installed in my home in Gauteng and I took out a 2 year subscription. This is seriously a storm in a tea cup.

      Ever - 2011-12-09 10:35

      Or storm in a D-cup....

  • Ian - 2011-12-09 09:08

the new crack he calls it, nice pun lol lol, churches, what a crock of crap

  • mressop - 2011-12-09 09:13

If you really need porn to feel good to, you can get it for free on the internet. Top TV or any other TV is a waste of money. TV is the new crack, not porn. I don't watch TV any more at all and you know what? I don't miss it one bit. I have my computer with internet where I can choose what I want to view (for now at least), other than that I have more free time to spend with the wife or outside or sleeping or whatever. Get rid of the boob tube

      Ed - 2011-12-09 09:21

ja sure dude cos there is no porn on the net right??? :)

      Len - 2011-12-09 09:26

you make a great point, mressop. There is so much choice these days and kids already have access to this stuff that this boycott may actually benefit TopTV. Is it possible that TopTV is paying these guys to create publicity for them? Porn is freely available on the internet, and any adult can go to any sex shop and get far better material than TopTV will likely show. I smell a rat.

      Randomhero6661 - 2011-12-09 09:46

Mressop good for you mate... you should see the new series on mnet action dude you missing out! WTF?!

  • Ed - 2011-12-09 09:14

what? sorry, but who is this weeping religous freak anyway? never heard of him and dont care what he thinks. no difference between him and a muslim fundamentalist who wishes to blow sh1t up to try and force his religion onto others... shame, get him a big pillow to go and cry himself to sleep on:)

  • wesley.bischoff - 2011-12-09 09:16

Thse church people are really pathetic. IT'S SUCH A HUGE SIN TO WATCH OR EVEN THINK OF PORN!!!!!! SAVE THE WORLD!!! They must concentrate on other issue's that actually matter, and issue's that pertain to their own interests. Leave us alone, we do not need your interference, or holier-than-thou attitudes. If someone wants to watch porn, let them. Or are they worried that some of their priests will be "tempted by the snake of satan?" Hahaha give me a break.

  • Bryan - 2011-12-09 09:16

What a load of un-adulterated crap..!! These holier than thou church fanatics feel they have the right to condem everyone around them with there pathetic drivel.... All I can say to them is rather get your own house in order before preaching moral condemnation....Twats..!!!

  • djwessels - 2011-12-09 09:18

Burger said this is proof that pornography in any medium is devastating for a community. Men and teens get so addicted to it that it has been described as "the new crack". WOW ! Imagine how those pediophile priests will become now , maybe they'll leave little boys alone and go for their mothers ?

  • Nosiphom - 2011-12-09 09:21

Many of your members will "boycott" in public, and watch in private ... ha ha ha ha. Besides no one is forcing anyone to watch the channels, why can't there be free choice in this country? Why should we always be controlled ? Who had ever said the Top TV is on the "moral" high ground that they are supposedly abandoning now ? Top TV I will join you - never mind about these moralists you will lose, onyl a few of them will heed the call anyway, they are hypocrites!

  • Tshivhombela Fhatuwani - 2011-12-09 09:28

Sometimes these so called men of cloth can't stop to amaze me. How can you complain about Top TV porn when your kids have smart phones to view pure porn unlike the mere moaning we view on tv channels. Apart from the fact that it's not anyone who owns a tv who is a Christian and I don't remember any verse that is against porn. Perhaps you can add more spice and cast away the missionary position by watching porn as well. If you can't beat them join them.

  • Ben - 2011-12-09 09:36

Here's some church porn... Genesis 19:30-36 Lot having drunk, drunk sex with his daughters..... Genesis 29: 21-28 Jacob, Two Sisters, And What the Hell, a Handmaid Judah 38:8-10 God Gives You Tips on How to Hold Your Load Solomon's Song, which he creatively titled Song of Solomon, was mostly about boobies. References can be seen in 1:13, and 2:6, and 4:5, and 4:16, and 5:4, and 7:7-8 . . . and 8:10... OK, the whole thing was pretty much "Titties, titties, I love titties." Take a look....

      Ben - 2011-12-09 09:38

ooh and this! Rough stuff for 2000 years ago! Ezekiel 23:19-20 19- Yet she became more and more promiscuous as she recalled the days of her youth, when she was a prostitute in Egypt. 20- There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses. People were thrown in the Bastille in the 1700's for writing less....

  • Cracker - 2011-12-09 09:39

If the Apostolic Faith Mission could have its way we would be legislated into submission. Only they and like-minded religious nuts would be free to live out their freedoms of choice - their particular faith and world views - all at the expense of the rest of us and in fact humanity. They once again justify why we should not take our freedoms for granted.

  • Rainbow - 2011-12-09 09:41

The fact remains that africa has one of the highest child and woman abuse rate in the world. What happens when some husband finsihes watching the porn gets worked up and his wife doesnt want to have sex with him . Is it not possible that he will beat her into submission. It is a fact that when some men get worked up and a woman wont give them sex they get agressive especially when drinking. So lets look at a senario where a childs uncle or grandfather is at home looking after the children and he decides to watch some porn. Once worked up are those children not vunerable and can everyone on this forum say that he is definatly not going to abuse the kids/kid. The fact is yes there are responsible men out there that would use it responsibly and are able to controll themselves afterwards but there are also men out there that cant and even if only one or two loose control and rape it is 2 cases to many. There is a shop/ s in almost every town/ city that provide porn moveies to rent and even supplies cubicles where a man can watch porn and get his mojo on privatly. There is no need to bring it into South african households at a reduced rate.

      Quintin König - 2011-12-09 10:08

What is the difference between renting it or watching it on TV??? You don't make any sense!!! And why is it always "men" woman can do the same thing!!!

      Len - 2011-12-09 10:08

You mention that Africa has the highest child and women abuse rate in the world. Let assume you are correct in your assessment. I will add that Africa has far less pornography channels that most of the world and those who abuse their children and wives have not access to television, let alone a satellite porn channel. This therefore creates problems for your argument because it is not pornography that is the cause. In fact, it is alcohol abuse, which the church mockingly drinks to represent the blood of Christ. Rape is not about sex, rather violence against the victim. The scenario you describe about uncle or grandfather happens without porn. Also, if these people have enough money to purchase a satellite porn channel, chances are that they have enough money to download the porn on the internet. So, the argument that porn on a TV channel is far more dangerous than porn on the internet does not make sense. Also, just because someone watches a television program about killing and then end up killing someone does not mean all television programs that involve killing should be banned. You can reduce every human being to the ones unable to control themselves in whatever they do. Porn can be downloaded on the internet, on smart phones and people subscribe to TT. It is not free and therefore not every household has it. If your brother or father are such deviants, then do not subscribe to it and you will not have uncles and grandfathers abusing children

      Alisha - 2011-12-09 11:43

It appears you know a lot about the jerk-off booths at Adult world rainbownation. What have you been up to lately?

      Rainbow - 2011-12-09 11:54

The diffrence is that in order to rent it you would have to go out and hire it which is a mission in itself. The rental you pay to get one movie is probably around the same amount ( R100) you will be paying to get a months subscription of 24 hour porn. Thus the cost alone will deter people from watching it on a regular basis. A uncle looking after the kids wont be leaving them at home to go all the way to pick up a movie but he will watch it in the house if the father/ mother of the children has installed it..

      Rainbow - 2011-12-09 12:11

Len I said one of the highest please read my comment properly. No matter how much you argue and try to justify porn , porn remains one of those things that can have a very negative impact on the people who come in contact with the person who indulges in it ( or in most cases addicted to it ). It removes the beauty out of love making and instigates sexual crimes. Porn feeds lust ,lust is carnal and devoid of love and can bring about all kinds of immoral behavior. That is the bottom line and nothing you or anyone else can say will change that fact.

      Len - 2011-12-09 12:12

@rainbow nation. As any business service, I have no doubt they will deliver for a good customer. Thing is, gamblers also have the incovenience of having to go to a casino to gamble and yet it is still a problem. For R100 a month, you can subscribe to MWEB and get free porn in the privacy of your home. So, I think your concerns are misplaced. How often does an uncle look after the kids, that you deem the entire country should be subjected to what an uncle does? What about the priests who abuse children, should all churches be banned because a few Catholic priests have abused children? It is not like the porno channel will be freely available to any idiot that turns their TV on, anyway. You cannot legislate for stupidity as you cannot legislate for those who choose to do wrong doing. What next, banning all cars from the roads because someone will speed?

      Len - 2011-12-09 12:47

@raibownaion Not really sure what your argument is. One of the highest? Fine, let me grant you that. It does not detract from my rebuttal of your point. I am not justifying choice, I am simply opposed to a bunch of hypocrites who deem themselves capable of making choices other people are quite capable of making on their own. I would not subscribe to porn, because I prefer the real thing, but I would not use my own morals to determine how other adults should deal with their morals. If porn upsets you, then do not subscribe to it. Fact remains that abuse in Africa happens without porno channels and therefore to claim that a porno channel has already contributed to this is inane. Now, it porn removes beauty out of love making for you, then you are free to avoid it, but you have no clue what I do in my bedroom and how I do it. I do not need you to tell me what to do in my bedroom to enhance my love life with my partner. How dare you purport to know what excites me and my partner? Again, you have not cited any research where pornography has been linked to sexual crimes or where porn feeds lust. Now, if porn for you is carnal and devoid of love, you are free to avoid it, but you have no right to try to decide what is right or wrong for me.

      Rainbow - 2011-12-09 14:40

Len I was using the uncle scenario as an example surley you are intelligent enough to realise that.

      Rainbow - 2011-12-09 14:42

You seem to be taking this very personally. I was generalising in my comment. And just like you have a right to your views so do I.

      Rainbow - 2011-12-09 14:46

Alisha. you dont need experience a hustler shop to know what is going on inside, you need only read the signs all over the shop windows indicating it. We have one smack bang in the middle of Pinetown boldly advertizing porn dvds, booths ect ...sadly you cant miss it.

      Len - 2011-12-09 15:22

Rainbownation. I was merely expounding on your example. Apologies for assuming you were intelligent enough to understand that.

  • brendan.beech - 2011-12-09 09:46

wow, can't believe how many ignorant people there are online today (well, it's just another typical day i guess…) do a little research into the effects of pornography: it is potentially more devastating than crack cocaine or heroin funny how aggressive & offensive some people get when anything is raised that threatens their jollies

      Len - 2011-12-09 10:10

Why not post the research that you have found that makes the connection so clearly you call others ignorant

      Cracker - 2011-12-09 10:38

Freedom of choice isn't a "jolly". If you wish to observe a real "jolly" go to an Apostolic Faith Mission church service and see the jollification as the trans state in unison with the loud music and singing takes hold.

      jody.beggs - 2011-12-09 11:06

If porn was more devastating than crack cocaine or heroin I'd be toothless, jobless and so fixated my hand would always be in my pants ? Dude just because you can't control yourself when exposed to porn , doesn't mean others can't ! Damn the man , save the Empire.

      Alisha - 2011-12-09 11:44

No brendan, YOU can't control yourself it seems. Need the number for a shrink?

      Fred - 2011-12-09 11:53

Citation for your claims urgently required or you just made it up. Suspect the latter.

      Joseph - 2011-12-09 13:34

This unsubstantiated statement would be only slightly less ridiculous if it were made by someone not using the flag of the verkrampte as a profile picture. I counter your fanciful statement with this: "Do a little research on the effects of intolerance, ignorance, hypocrisy and plain stupidity: potentially more devastating than blind religious fundamentalism."

      thiesa - 2011-12-11 08:05

There is enough research to prove that the 'high' experiencing from watching pornography equals using drugs. You can search the internet under 'sex and the brain'. Thank You Dr Isak for taking Vino Govender, CEO of On Digital Media which runs TopTV, on who 'made it clear at last year's TopTV launch that they operate their business according to strict Christian ethics codes'. Mr Govender you are just judged by your own words, I'm counselling many women whose husbands watch pornography, there is no chance for a happy fulfilled marriage relationship where this is involved.

  • Randomhero6661 - 2011-12-09 09:49

Yeah! Why does the magic man and his magic son do nothing about these filthy people. Hint - they don't exist.

  • Don - 2011-12-09 09:56

Len you are wrong about stating there is nothing in the Bible about pornography. Almost every chapter has a stament about immoral acts and thoughts, did you ever read about Sodom and Gomara ? as one example. There are 1000's of verses that state that God deems immorality, lust, carnal thoughts etc as wrong and sinful and it is not only the Christian faith that believes this. It is sinful and socially immoral in many people's view but it is your choice and anyone else's to chose to sin or not and whether you believe it to be and that is true. Hope you read up on this in the Bible and you will see.

      sean.redmond3 - 2011-12-09 10:07

I do not have a Bible, and alcohol is good for you? Getting pissed and killing people is ok?

      Len - 2011-12-09 10:26

@Don. You have deemed pornography to be an immoral act, which is your right. nowhere in the bible is pornography described as an immoral act. I would be happy if I was wrong, but the problem is that the bible never at any point mentions pornography and say it is an immoral act. You and the churches have decided it is an immoral act. I grant you the right to make that determination for yourselves, but not for me. Boycott TT for all I care and teach your flock to avoid anything sex related. It may actually work if directed to those that subscribe to your version of faith. South Africa is a secular state and since this is a satelite (not free to air) channel, you can avoid being exposed to such immorality

      Len - 2011-12-09 10:38

Have you ever watched pornography, Don?

Same here. Escaping from religion was the best thing that ever happened to me. But it was not easy after all the years of brainwashing I went through as a child. Why are people doing this to their children?

  • poaul - 2011-12-09 09:58

This is the classic story of the old lady complaining that her neighbours walk around naked in their house. When the police came to investigate, they found that you can't see the neighbours' house at all from the old lady's property. "No", said the old lady, "when you stand on the kitchen table and crook your neck, you can see them!".

      jody.beggs - 2011-12-09 11:14

  • Cameron - 2011-12-09 10:02

hahahahaha I dont even have to read this article to find it a joke, the church to boycott, you MUST be joking.... If you look back on the "church" and remembered the priests who have been up for molestation and rape, heck the pope had his own problem with one his bigwig old farts doing the naughty naughty molestation crap! I would think it better for the almighty "church" to clean house first before focusing its energies on something as insignificant as porn on t.v, what a bunch of idiots, do they have any idea how easy it is to find porn on the internet. What a waste of time you bunch of sicko phaedophiles (I wonder what you religious nuts will say about that hmmmmm?)

      Fred - 2011-12-09 13:49

  • yvonnerichardsvandijk - 2011-12-09 10:54

What a cop out on the TV station. So now husbands will do it behind their wives backs.... that is what they did when they bought porn magazines... hid them away hoping no one would find them and when they thought there sons were old enough told them of the hiding place. So now they will record the programs and somewhere the children will get hold of the recordings anyway. Typical of people in power... promise you one thing and deliver another. If they can't stand up to peer pressure what example are they teaching the youth. All the men that are asking for it... their answer to them should be simple, NO. What are they going to do? Leave the country? Great... lets help them pack!!!

      Len - 2011-12-09 11:03

Are you worried that your children will not listen to you? Surely, you cannot prevent the entire population from watching porn, because you lack the ability to control your own children. "At the same time spake the LORD by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, Go and loose the sackcloth from off thy loins, and put off thy shoe from thy foot. And he did so, walking naked and barefoot. And the LORD said, Like as my servant Isaiah hath walked naked and barefoot three years for a sign and wonder upon Egypt and upon Ethiopia; So shall the king of Assyria lead away the Egyptians prisoners, and the Ethiopians captives, young and old, naked and barefoot, even with their buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt." (Isaiah 20:2-4)

      Mike - 2011-12-09 11:22

Men have been doing behind their wives backs since the beginning of time...what's new and what does that have to do with porn? Some of the views against porn are so myopic. Porn is healthy and fun....now give it to mE!!!!

      Fred - 2011-12-09 12:02

This Len guy needs to be excused - brainwashed with jeebus stories from infancy and never grown out of it. Wonder if he still believes in the Tooth Fairy, Santa and the Easter Bunny. If not, why not?

      Len - 2011-12-09 12:26

Concerntrate, Fred. Where in my argument does it compute that I would believe in the Tooth Fairies, Santa or Easter Bunny? Did you gather this from my comments, or are you seeing things? Pipe down, made and read and follow the argument before you comment. It will save you from further embarrassment

      Mike - 2011-12-09 13:26

The bible is bronze age porn with lots of violence. It's people who follow this bs that are the rapist and pedophiles of our society.

      Len - 2011-12-09 13:34

SA 16:22 Absalom "went into his father's concubines" in the sight of all Israel. Now, this must have been porno of biblical proportions

      Fred - 2011-12-09 13:53

@Len The perhaps you can give a cogent explanation as to why you reject the Easter Bunny, Santa and the Tooth Fairy but still believe in jeebus? The evidence for all is the same. I contend we are both atheists, I just believe in one fewer god than you do. When you understand why you dismiss all the other possible gods, you will understand why I dismiss yours. - Stephen F. Roberts

      Len - 2011-12-09 14:42

@Fred What makes you think I believe in “jeebus” It is you who have gone to that conclusion and I have reread what I wrote and cannot find a single instance where I professed to a believe in Jesus, Christianity or any religion. It is important to read properly what people write before you slam into a conclusion as it can be embarrassing. Do a Control F, and type “Len” and read all if not just a few of my comments and then let me know if you still arrive at this conclusion. In fact, there are certain parts where I stated agreement to your argument is seemingly anti-religion. I just think you need to read properly before you engage in a debate with someone, lest you are in the same corner and embarrass yourself with your accusation. Take a chill pill, bro and read my comments and if you arrive at a conclusion that I believe in Jesus, Tooth Fairies, Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, then either I need to redo Matric, or you need new glasses. Thing is, bro, I do not believe in any god. That will make you a believer in -1 God, which is a concept I have not as yet encountered, but this world is big enough for the both of us. Rejecting my god is damn impossible as I do not believe in any god, so the quote is not applicable to me, Mate. I like you and agree with some of your comments. I think you missed a trick on this one.

      Fred - 2011-12-09 14:44

@Len No response? Quoting selective bibble verse after selected bibble verse makes nothing true. So I am not surprised.

      Len - 2011-12-09 15:05

      You need help, Fred.

  • Clarissa - 2011-12-09 11:25

  • Alisha - 2011-12-09 11:33

Won't you rather quote more from Harry Potter it's better reading. Bible quotes are there to terrify the supernaturalists and their children.

      Len - 2011-12-09 13:31

      @Daniel. Quoting pornography

      Fred - 2011-12-09 13:54

Quoting from a book of myths does not make it real.

      Len - 2011-12-09 14:53

Who said it did, Fred? Being blind is not a virtue.

  • Len - 2011-12-09 13:26

SO 4:5, 7:3 "Your two breasts are like two fawns ...."

  • Len - 2011-12-09 13:29

SO 7:7-9 "You are stately as a palm tree, and your breasts are like its clusters. I say I will climb the palm tree and lay hold of its branches. Oh may your breasts be like clusters of the vine ...."

      Fred - 2011-12-09 13:56

The worst insult I can offer to your postings, is that it probably took you a long time to come up with any of them...and you were then also presumably proud of what you had thought of. Well done.

      Len - 2011-12-09 14:51

And the best thing I can say about you Fred is that you are either blind, or are absolutely ignorant. Either way, you do need to read properly before making a fool of yourself. Considering that you have demonstrated that you are extremely slow, here is an explanation of this post: This above is a verse in the bible. It is the kind of language/material I think many well meaning christian parents would not want to expose to their children. It is therefore posted to show IRONY (I can also explain this to you, if you so wish) that a people who believe in the bible as the word of god and are eager to ban other people from watching porn, would have verses in the bible whose language would be considered X-Rated. The point I was making, which you spectacularly missed, is that the bible if full of the same filth that these religious fanatics preach against. I hope this explanation will suffice and you will now stop making a fool of yourself. Chill brother!!!

      Len - 2011-12-09 15:15

      Apology accepted Fred

  • iiafrica - 2011-12-09 14:19

I am so glad Dr. Isak is responding to this national abominable intention of this network. Top Tv is in most of our poorer houe olds as it was an alternative for DSTV. Now they want to launch a 24hr porn channel...making the poor even more poorer...Dr. Isak i support you and May God step in

      Len - 2011-12-09 14:46

Yes, I can imagine the poor who bought TopTV will be so much disadvantaged that you need to prevent everyone (if the ones not poor) from having a choice of watching what they like. (And Fred, this is intended to be sarcastic, and not an indication of my belief system)

      Len - 2011-12-09 15:04

and your belief system, ekfeugo, says you should call people you do not agree with, Wankers? If that is the case, more validation why I want to stay clear of people like you. Not only Catholic abuse little boys. I remember of an homophobic evangelist in the US who used the services of a male hooker. Then there was Swaggart who was not Catholic. I am sure there is many like them who are not Catholic, but as hypocritical as the next.

      Len - 2011-12-09 18:23

ekfeugo. I do not watch porn, I just believe in the right of those who choose to watch it to do so, without the hypocrites denying them the right to do so. At no point did I claim to watch point. The idea that one's stand on an issue has to be based on self interest is something I do not subscribe to. I oppose abuse of women even though I am not a woman. Question for you: Why are you opposed to adults with the means to, to watch porn in the privacy of their homes?

  • Sean1877 - 2011-12-09 14:52

i am an atheist and do not run my life by the teachings of The Bible. i do however live by a strict moral code that has nothing to do with religeon but more on how i treat others. i was also born with a brain which allows me the freedom to choose what i watch. example: when "pastor" Ray comes on i switch channels, not becuase i dont approve but mearly becuase i dont believe in what he says. really easy. the porn on toptv is not something i will subscribe to but there in is my point "i CHOOSE not to subscribe!! please people wake up live your own lives, please dont force your beliefs on others.

  • rose.mcmillan - 2011-12-09 15:13

Lets start a petition to STOP TOP TV from showing porno movies, are we becoming a nation with no morals at all. Top TV you can expect to receive a cancellation of my subscription if you go ahead with your dirt and smut

      Len - 2011-12-09 15:14

And I will sign up to replace you.

      Ben - 2011-12-09 15:15

      and me!

      Joseph - 2011-12-09 16:49

Why are all the Christians up in arms about this? No-one is forcing you to buy a sepearate decoder, pay for a seperate subscription, select a personal pincode, etc. are they? "It will corrupt the children" they scream. Maybe then you shouldn't let your children watch your passcode protected, self-selected, personally choosen porn channel maybe?

      Joseph - 2011-12-09 16:52

Oh, and despite all that... Much of the porn that I've seen is clearly funded by religous organisations anyway. It's all full of "Oh my God", "Hallelujah" and "Lord, I'm coming" utterances every couple of minutes, like in a average Sunday service.

      Christopher Hart - 2011-12-09 17:39

If toptv wants to bring porn channels into this country and charge a seperate fee to access them, let them. If you dont want to subscribe to toptv if they are given permission to broadcast porn then dont. If you are worrying about kids watching it then rather worry about their parents allowing them to watch it becuase if parents don't teach their kids about age appropriate stuff (i work in a video rental store and often see parents rent 18/16 age restricted games/movies for their kids that are noot even half the minimum age to watch those movies.

  • traceyLew - 2011-12-09 18:04

What the hell do you want to watch porn for anyway? It's ludicrous and pathetic really. It's not what happens in real life unless you are in to S & M and whatever so it's not a real reflection of the real World. It's misleading and really revolting to watch which is why I don't. Those in a committed relationship or marriage should look at their partners only. Why on Earth look at other people nude doing revolting things? Watching can only lead to misguided expectations and experiences. This is my humble opinion.

      Len - 2011-12-09 18:19

I know a few movies that are not a reality of what happens in real life, but no one is advocating they be banned. While I do accept your view, why should you impose your view on others? You do not need to subscribe and I guarantee you, you will spared the unreal life you protect yourself against. How many sci-fi have you asked be banned lately?

  • Marlene - 2011-12-09 18:16

I can't believe all the stuff I read in the comments! And I cant believe a church still thinks they can influence what people view or not. Surely they trust their congregation to make the right choice, to protect their children and teach them values. People are still reading and taking as fact a book that was written at a time when people believed the world was flat. Leaders probably came together to decide on 10 Commandments and other bible passage classics, to help them help people to live together and also not spread disease via sleeping around, etc, etc. In this day and age we know what causes diseases, we know the earth is round and millions of years old. We have electricity, access to books and Internet, which in turn gives us access to other cultures and also knowledge on just about anything. Therefore, we surely must be able to see all that the bible was written as people saw it at that time, and we know there is much more to life now, than what they had then. So pls leave me to make my own choices. Live and let live. Pls feel free to believe what u like, but pls don't try and make a believer out of me.

      Len - 2011-12-09 18:22

Some parents will sit and watch a violent movie. They will not chase the child out of the room, when one guy aims a gun and shoot another in the moving, but the moment someone does what is natural and does not lead to murder, they are told to get out or if it happened before the parents were able to prevent the kid from watching, they will be embarrassed. We have no problem with the glorification of violence because there are sides, but we are so embarrassed about what is natural?

      Marlene - 2011-12-09 18:24

      @Len - completely agree with u!

  • ron.harman1 - 2011-12-09 19:01

THESE PEOPLE NEED TO GROW UP FOR CRIPES SAKE!!!!

  • Cornelius - 2011-12-10 18:56

Turns out that Isak Burger has interests in DSTV

  • Clive - 2011-12-11 20:07

Burger will be glued to his TV to watch the porn so he can report and complain about it. TYPICAL

  • Richard - 2011-12-11 22:25

Len, I read most of your comments and respect your views. I just dont agree with them :) I would like to comment on what sexual immorality is. Is it porn? I know you wont agree with me, but I would just like to explain why people (Christian people like myself) are quoting these "sexual immorality" verses. If you look at what God created sex for, in the bible, it serves a purpose. Not to climax and orgasm(though thats definitely half the fun ;), but to be a tool between a husband and a wife. To bring them closer together, to express love to a person that you are married to. To make them "one" Ephisians 5:31 says, "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh" How then, could we call a man/woman having sex with multiple people possibly 50 or so, be called moral? Shouldnt we be setting a good/moral example to our kids? A good gauge would be, would you put on a porn movie for your kids while you making dinner? I dounbt it. God gave us all a moral compass, some people simply choose to ignore it more than others. Take care

Hmm, freedom of any kind is free, but if I say I'm free to beat myself repeatedly with a mallet it might not be the best option for my health. Porn is not good for marriages, men or women no matter how consensual it all is. Look here: http://www.chastity.org/chastity-qa/pornography-etc/pornography/whats-wrong-with-loo
