Pretoria - The Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) launched a scathing attack on TopTV's "deception and lack of integrity" due to the channel's plan to start broadcasting pornography.
Isak Burger, president of the AFM, is threatening a nationwide boycott campaign along with other churches against TopTV and its advertisers if the plan goes ahead.
Burger said in a statement that Vino Govender, CEO of On Digital Media which runs TopTV, made it clear at last year's TopTV launch that they operate their business according to strict Christian ethics codes.
He promised that they would not start broadcasting pornography and said they "do not want to poison the minds of millions of South African children".
What one can now conclude is that the poisoning of millions of children's minds has now become acceptable business practice for TopTV, the statement said.
'The new crack'
Burger said this is proof that pornography in any medium is devastating for a community. Men and teens get so addicted to it that it has been described as "the new crack".
Men who compulsively watch porn struggle to have normal sexual relations with their wives. This leads to marital problems and divorce. Family breakdowns are a major contributing factor to crime, violence and other social problems in South Africa.
Burger has called on the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (Icasa) to reject TopTV's application.
Tatho Mahapa of TopTV maintains that the protection of children is of upmost importance to them.
TopTV is aware of religious objections against adult content, but is also aware of requests for it.
After careful consideration of research reports they decided to make it available as a separate, stand-alone option.
People who do not want it, will therefore not have access to it.
According to TopTV it is not a solution to simply not deliver the content, because the demand for it will not go away.
