DStv warns of possible signal loss

Cape Town – MultiChoice is warning DStv subscribers about possible signal loss and interference from Tuesday due to the switchover process to digital terrestrial television (DTT) in South Africa.

The advent of DTT – South Africa's TV industry switching from analogue to digital TV broadcasting – has the potential to impact DStv subscribers' picture quality because of interference from transmitters from the signal distributor Sentech switching on new transmitters around the country.

MultiChoice is now telling subscribers that picture quality could be impacted from Tuesday and that some DStv subscribers might need to have their decoder and television retuned. Possible picture interference could start in Cape Town from 15 May onwards.

Blue screens, snowy picture

DStv subscribers could experience any number of problems ranging from blue screens, snowy pictures, buzzing sounds or a flashing 4 or "E04" message.

DStv subscribers who experience any interference should contact the MultiChoice call centre in your area for help to restore picture quality.

DStv subscribers in Cape Town most likely to experience interference in picture quality would be subscribers who use the RF output on their decoder connected to their TV set and subscribers using an outdoor antenna connected to their decoder's RF in.

Subscribers who use the RCA cable will not be affected.

Customers who experience interference will have to have their decoder and television retuned from channel 50 to either channel 48 or channel 52.

  • Piet - 2012-05-14 15:09

    Just make sure you refund

  • vernon.samuel.7 - 2012-05-14 15:10

Oh no! So we will miss some of the re-runs and repeats? Nevermind, I am sure that they will be re-run and repeated again when the signal is back up.

      Stille - 2012-05-14 16:00

So you two prefer sabc and toptv. Good luck with that.

      henk63 - 2012-05-15 18:06

I think we should use the time better. I also sit and rant about the bad content when in fact I could rather be studying. Me MYSELF is the idiot for watching the sh&t they transmit every afternoon.

  • zaakiro - 2012-05-14 15:31

It's something we have to experience, natural process taking it's course whether in a developing nation or 1st World country... People need to shut up an accept, ultimately DTT is the future an should provide better quality in broadcasting, so in order to get something we must be able to give something....an since it's time an just a few rands people should deal with it

      Peter - 2012-05-15 13:59

..... but why are we only being told ON the day of implementation? Why could the SABC and Sentech not be PRO-active and tell us BEFORE it becomes an issue?

  • tatsee - 2012-05-14 15:39

Im warning them of possible subscription loss.

      Wayne Hambides - 2012-05-14 19:01

DSTV sucks anyway, only reason i pay their high subs is to watch sport, why can i not select my own channels and pay accordingly. rip off i tell you. repeat rip off. repeat rip off. repeat rip off. re........

      skootzie - 2012-05-15 10:30

Wayne: This question was already addressed by MC; it's not financially viable (apparently) to allow people to select their own channels. See this link: http://mybroadband.co.za/news/broadcasting/15710-Choosing-your-own-DStv-channels-MultiChoice-explains.html

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT ANYBODY ELSE OUT THERE, BUT I HAVE HAD QUITE A BIT OF SIGNAL LOSS LATELY, AS WELL AS THE CHANNELS CHANGING INCREDIBLY SLOWLY. THIS AND THE OTHER PROBLEM OF THE CONSTANT RE-RUNS DRIVE ME SCATTY. WHY BOTHER TO HAVE A PVR DECODER FOR RECORDING PROGRAMS YOU MIGHT MISS, WHEN THEY ARE SHOWN OVER AND OVER AGAIN.

      Phoenix - 2012-05-14 18:26

I posed a letter here about 2 weeks ago. The slow machines is a software problem introduced with a software update late March - that DsTV is generally denying.

      jazzmatt69 - 2012-05-15 01:26

IS IT JUST ME, OR IS READING AN ENTIRE COMMENT THAT'S WRITTEN IN CAPITAL LETTERS RATHER ANNOYING (AND UNNECESSARY)

      Marlene - 2012-05-15 07:43

Hey that's all been happening to me, I thought I was doing something wrong!

      Rodney - 2012-05-15 13:20

      @JAZZMATT69. iT CoULD bE wORsE

      Sean - 2012-05-15 17:21

Your slow decoder may be due to having too many recordings on your pvr. delete as much as you can

  • tshivhombelaf - 2012-05-14 16:01

There has been a lot of signal loss or poor quality of signals during PSL live games this year. The anticipated disruption might be from digital migration but the quality of Dstv service has declined, may be it's because of the massive increase of subription.

  • tshivhombelaf - 2012-05-14 16:33

DTT or no DTT, Dstv is just abusing it's pay tv monopoly. Dstv doesn't have a solid competitor. There no much on Dstv than repeats.

  • Scott - 2012-05-14 16:34

From what I can gather you will NOT lose signal from the satellite to your dish, completely different frequency bands are used so no interference is possible. What you may get is interference if you use RF/COAX cables from your decoder to your TV, not only is this unlikely unless you are using badly shielded cable but this is easily fixed by changing the frequency your decoder is putting out, so calm down peeps...

  • chere.nienaber - 2012-05-14 16:43

I've been having problems with my decoder for 2 weeks already! Could it be related? It freezes about every second day and I have to reset it about 3 times before it works again... and then my Tv guide takes about 2 hours every time to reload.

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-05-16 09:59

Nope. Thats common lately. Not to do with what they warn you for....or maybe I am wrong. They lately blame everything on some-one/thing else anyway.

  • ktheron2 - 2012-05-14 16:56

    Silence! I kill you!

  • Claude - 2012-05-14 17:09

What MultiChoice fails to warn their subscribers about once they do the DTT migration is... Users will need to change their existing 60cm or smaller dishes to a bigger 80cm dish. Failing to do so will result in loss of signal to certain channels especially their HD channels.

      jazzmatt69 - 2012-05-15 01:29

Anything to back this statement up with? Surely something that important wouldn't be left out... "We're switching over to digital...you might experience some signal loss... Oh by the way, we forgot to tell you that you need to get a bigger dish" Mind you, this IS multichoice we're talking about.

      skootzie - 2012-05-15 10:33

Easy fix, they can send someone out to install the new dish - at no expense to me.

      Peter - 2012-05-15 14:04

DSTV = DIGITAL satelite teleVision .... DSTV is not being migrated, it is now and always has been digital. So, where are you getting this hog-wash information from? Sources please?

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-05-16 10:11

@Peter. Ha, ha, ha! I was told yesterday, when having a "guru" over to advise on changes on my home media system, that it is still an analog signal. Apparently there are some digital blablabla attached to it but it is not digital. I argue that the name said it all and the "guru" just laugh. I told him I see digital disturbance before on my tv and he said so does the people who still use analog decoders. Realizing I trying to be smart on a subject I don't know I stop and left my grumpy remarks for when I will receive his quote. Please, some other "guru" out there help/advise us!!!!!

  • tumedi.molokwane - 2012-05-14 17:44

Does this mean if my tv and decorder does not match the standard I will have to buy new set or what?

  • Phillip Meyer - 2012-05-14 19:11

DSTV need to start looking at their value offering. The alternatives (Internet TV, AppleTV etc) to DSTV are starting to make more sense. More choice, more current and watch what you want, when you want without signal issues.

  • zack.rossouw - 2012-05-14 20:09

Guese WHAT. This month DSTV disconnected us for R0.01, they have billed our account incorrectly and I had to ask fot credit. The account department miscalculated the credit by the R0.01 and after I paid more than R1200 for two subscribtions (holiday home and residential home) they disconnected us for the R0.01 miscalculation!!! And to make the experiece even more pleasant I had to spend 45min on the phone to get this resolved!!!! LESSON!!! PLEASE DONT ASK FOR CREDIT!!! JUST PAY PAY PAY, weldone DSTV!!!

  • zack.rossouw - 2012-05-14 20:18

PEOPLE!!! DO NOT ASK FOR CREDIT!!! This is what happened to us this month. DSTV overcharged our account, and I had to ask for credit. The accounts department miscalculated the credit by R0.01 and GUESS WHAT we were disconnected!! lol. After the calculation was done we paid more than R1200 to DSTV for TWO subscriptions (holiday- and residential home) only to found that their calcukation was out by R0.01. I had to spend more than 45min on the phone to get this resolved, and the connection restored!! UNBELIEVALBE!!!

      lidwaan - 2012-05-15 06:28

Whoa, i think we heard you the first time...your TWO subscriptions doesnt entitle you to two POSTS!!!!

  • dayne.nel - 2012-05-15 07:03

MNET terrestrial is also the WORST idea Multichoice ever had!

      etsdup - 2012-05-15 15:18

Multichoice was born out of M-Net terrestrial. M-Net started in 1986. DStv was launched in 1995, some 9 years after M-net terrestrial.

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-05-16 11:11

@etsup. I remember those days. They started with the big cities JHB, CT and think Dbn and than they spread out to populated areas like Klerksdorp and surroundings. They were still market and selling the decoders out of a combi and your aerial you can go and get at Ellies or something , but it must be a certain colour. I think the deposit was R90 and the subscription +- R 30. The decoder became yours after a while. At a stage subscribers were even able to buy shares at cheap/half price or something( o..my memory slips) It think it was R2 a share and now it is a nice package. I wonder how much money I have spend on the group so far.

  • Grant - 2012-05-15 08:47

I don't see a problem though. They shows will be repeated at least 10 times during the month and then a couple of more times during the year anyway so no one is losing out.

  • michael.thomson.52 - 2012-05-15 11:33

If this happens Saturday night during the UEFA Champions League final all hell will break lose!

  • Had - 2012-05-15 12:17

At what point can we stop paying that criminal SABC TV licence fee ? Does DTT mean one needs some additional hardware to view SABC TV rubbish ? I'm tired of paying their criminal fees every year when I cannot watch their drivel for fear of puking on my carpet. What makes it more irritating is that 90% of the country don't bother paying, but since they have my details, I'm suckered into paying this stupid fee every year.

  • Jim - 2012-05-15 12:23

Im interested in the comment on the slow switching (freezing) of channels. I have this all the time. Also the reloading of the information (TV Guide) takes ages. The Signal strength is good - but i used to have no signal on channels 2 & 3 (which is correct) 1&4 are the channels with signals if you have dual view, now 1,2,3,4, all have signals? No good answers from Multichoice - just 'bring your decoder in and we will check it' i would be there every day with all the different faults i get...

  • Cynthia - 2012-05-15 12:37

Some of the reruns are good. When I tell my daughter I watched a movie a second time, she always asks "and did the ending change". We always laugh like crazy, but sometimes, believe it or not, I cannot always remember the ending. Don't moan, there are so many people out there who would be soooo happy to have DSTV, repeats and reruns included!

  • Jacqui - 2012-05-15 13:16

But not a word about a refund.

      Sankie - 2012-05-15 15:15

Refund for what? Take your remote, menu-advance options-pin9949-equipment setup-uhf (change) - DONE! In 3 seconds...

  • brionyl.french - 2012-05-15 13:27

then we should have May free!!! not our problem!!!

  • max.rapea - 2012-05-15 13:43

    These interruptions should be discounted.

  • George - 2012-05-15 16:59

DsTV, how about losing some of those old movies?

  • Craig - 2012-05-15 19:53

Thats not my problem, don't warn me about not providing the service that I pay for and for which you take my money, I don't care what your issues are, you have a responsibilty, if you can't meet it don't take the cash, it's as simple as that, if you can't do it and you take money that's against the law, no matter what contract you may have in place, shine up or ship out ! ! ! !

  • Gian - 2012-05-15 20:17

I'm very sorry but I believe that we should stand together agains this! the SABC is is useless and if you pay that kind off money then you should receive only the best kind of service! So don't "warn" me before hand that you will not be delivering!!!!I don't care!IF YOU WANT MY MONEY....LIVE UP 2 IT!!!!!!!!!!!! btw last year of DSTV for ME!!!!!!

  • Gian - 2012-05-15 20:20

no jokes with this thing! we like many other things in this country pay for things that we do not receive! so expect lower bills, but rather higher monthly expences!

  • Schmee - 2012-05-16 08:14

For heavens sake don't interrupt the service. We already have a population explosion.

  • Julie - 2012-05-16 08:16

I get all these funney messages and no signal so it's nothing new,

  • esilinda - 2012-05-16 08:37

So theres is nothing we can do about this,DSTV is ripping as off really, they repeat everything every day.i only pay for sport actually.this is nonses.

  • Carry - 2012-05-16 12:41

WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO THE OTHER NEW PAYING TV CHANNEL ? NOTHING LIKE A BIT OF STIFF COMPETITION THAT CAN SORT OUT ALL THE RE-RUNS OF RERUNS AND JUST PLAIN SLACK SERVICE. IF YOU THINK THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM, TRY AND PHONE DSTV WITH A QUERY - PUSH THIS BUTTON, THEN THAT BUTTON,..... AFTER WHAT SEEMS LIKE HOURS, YOU MAY ACTUALLY GET TO SPEAK TO A CONSULTANT. WE WANT TO PAY FOR THE CHANNELS THAT WE LIKE - NOT THE TELEBET CHANNEL, PARLIAMENTARY UPDATE CHANNEL, ETC.

  • Richard - 2012-05-16 15:17

Geez, so DSTV / Multichoice do suck. I thought it was only me.

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-08-21 14:57

If it rains we don't have DSTV anyway. They tell us it happens all over the world. What a lot of jokers, no where else have we ever had the rain problem, only here.

  • Consolata Katua - 2014-10-01 15:27
