Deena Naidoo wins MasterChef

2012-07-24 20:58
Johannesburg - Deena Naidoo is South Africa's first MasterChef.

The 45-year-old IT specialist from Durban beat out Sue-Ann Allen from Cape Town to take the title after a gruelling 18 weeks of cooking.

Deena was announced the winner of the reality cooking show at an event held at the MondoVino Restaurant at the SunSquare Hotel in Montecasino, Johannesburg.

In addition to the title, Deena won R8m in prizes, including R250 000 in cash from Robertson's, one of the show's main sponsors, a car from Hyundai and the opportunity to run his own restaurant.

MasterChef SA is an M-Net production.  The show was shot at the MasterChef kitchen situated on the Nederburg wine estate in the Western Cape.

But He has to go to Monte Casino now? WTF...open up in your hometown!

  • millionwatts1 - 2012-07-24 21:23

He won this thing 2 months ago! Those Hyundai promos and that feature in a Sunday paper was a give away. Good script though.

Well Done Deena, now I cannot wait to eat at your restaurant.

Only watched the last 4 episodes and the closer you get to the end of a show the better it gets but not with MC... It just lacked and I watched the Aus MC and I did like that one. It's a lot of fuss for very little excitement!!

      tiaan.odendaal1 - 2012-07-24 21:50

If you only watched 4 episodes, why not just keep quiet????

      jean.tredoux.5 - 2012-07-24 21:59

So typical, fricken over sensitive!!! like i said at the end, a show must be more exciting and since it lacked for me I can pretty much still raise my opinion!

      jean.tredoux.5 - 2012-07-24 22:34

OH FOR GOD SAKES!!! Now race has been brought in?? I was talking about the show, now I'm suddenly upset an Indian guy won?????

      tooka.loosh - 2012-07-24 23:51

Chill jean I'm sure there must be appropriate shows for guys like you. Why not watch MasterChef USA or AUS? - I'm pretty sure all their contestants are white. :)

      goldwright - 2012-07-25 01:59

I enjoyed the Aus MC too, but I enjoyed our SA MC more and am glad Deena, a fellow "Natalian" won and deservedly so. People like jean are entitled to their own opinions...... a little while ago (before SA MC aired) I was reading the comments on one of the Aus websites re their MC, and it was interesting how many of them didn't like it, - comparing it to the American & UK MC, so it just goes to show, you can't make everyone happy.

      jo.barton.92 - 2012-07-25 07:24

Jean, this was the first attempt at this show for us. These are all amateurs who gave it a good go. They were all humble people from all walks of life who triumphed when faced with the most pressurised situations. I certainly wouldn’t have been able to do it and are very proud of all of them. Deena really deserved this prize and unlike you, I watch more than 4 episodes. It’s like you watched the last 5 minutes of a movie and claimed that the movie is horrible because there aren’t enough white people in it.

      jean.tredoux.5 - 2012-07-25 09:22

Jo why are you preaching to me about the contestants, did i say anything about them, did i say anything about the winner! Will it help if I type in capital letters? I'm thinking you got stuck at that stupid comment of Iownabester where she had to mention race... and comparing 4 episodes to the last 5min of a movie is dumb... if the final episodes wasn't exciting (FOR ME) then i doubt the rest were as well (FOR ME)!!

  • Jay Marian - 2012-07-24 22:15

Congrats Deena! Being humble and cooking from the heart pays dividends! Well done !

  • julie.j.vanrensburg - 2012-07-24 22:24

Well done, Deena, but Sue-Ann also deserves congrats as she also did very well. Deena does get the prize/s, but I hope Sue-Ann also gets a consolation prize - she deserves one for all her stalwart efforts! What say you all?

      jo.barton.92 - 2012-07-25 07:28

I think they all deserve recognition from this. I was very impressed with them all, especially the top 10. Deena was consistently good but all their lives will now change not just Deena's. Deena was my favourite but I had a soft spot for Sarel and his smile.Sue Ann will be able to fulfil her dream. She is genuinely a nice person.

  • wendylg - 2012-07-25 01:28

  • denny.cray - 2012-07-25 09:31

The show isn't really my cup of tea but I did catch a few bits and pieces. Congrats to Deena - seems like a really cool guy too.

  • jacquikim.greenwood - 2012-07-25 10:22

Congrats to both Deena & Sue Ann! Huge fan, never missed an episode. I predicted half way through the show that Deena was going to win. Mondo Vino Is such a nice restaurant & I had the pleasure of meeting with Benny through my work, so Deena I now want to come meet with you to supply you the best South African Olive Oil!

  • lee.hodson.16 - 2012-07-25 10:46
