Disney uses graffiti in South Africa to bring Star Wars Rebels characters to life!

2014-10-15 16:11

Johannesburg - The Walt Disney Company Africa (TWDA) just completed a unique graffiti project in Cape Town and Johannesburg to introduce local communities to the characters of Star Wars Rebels, a brand new animated series on Disney XD (DStv, Channel 304) based on the iconic Star Wars franchise.

Professional artists Justin "Nomad" Badenhorst and Charles "Riot" Keylock, transformed a wall outside Mzoli’s, the popular tourist hotspot and hangout for locals in Gugulethu, Cape Town. The Rebels then gathered in Soweto, where a wall in Pimville was transformed. With local residents looking on, each wall took 5 days to bring the eye catching artwork to completion.

Deirdre King, Head of Marketing at The Walt Disney Company Africa says: "We are thrilled to be bringing Star Wars Rebels to our fans in such an exciting way. The animated series on Disney XD not only continues the epic tradition of Star Wars, but also introduces viewers to a brand new set of heroes. When thinking about how to present this series, the use of local artists creating beautiful walls really resonated with us and we are thrilled to have added such an eye-catching and different activation to the Western Cape and Gauteng."

A short film video of the campaign will soon be released to spread the news of this truly local initiative.

Star Wars Rebels
will debut Saturday mornings beginning Saturday, October 18 (09:20), exclusively on Disney XD (DStv, Channel 304).

Set between the events of Star Wars Episodes III and IV, the story unfolds during a dark time when the evil Galactic Empire is tightening its grip of power on the galaxy. Imperial forces have occupied a remote planet and are ruining the lives of its people.  The motley but clever crew of the starship Ghost - cowboy Jedi Kanan, ace pilot Hera, street-smart teenager Ezra, the "muscle" Zeb, warrior firebrand Sabine, and cantankerous old astromech droid Chopper - is among a select few who are brave enough to stand against the Empire. Together, they will face threatening new villains, encounter colorful adversaries, embark on thrilling adventures and become heroes with the power to ignite a rebellion.
