Forget Baywatch! Meet the lifeguards of Durban Beach Rescue

Cape Town – Step aside Baywatch, there are some new lifeguards in town!

Durban Beach Rescue is the first locally produced TV show which follows real life lifeguards across Durban Beaches.

The show premieres on the Travel Channel (DSTV 175) on Saturday, 4 July at 20:00.

Here’s everything you need to know about the lifeguards.

Sihle Xaba – 'The guardian of the people'

Sihle is currently the senior lifeguard at Battery Beach. He has 18 years of experience and is a champion body boarder. He is a proud father and family man and wants his children to be proud of him. Sihle gives back to his community by mentoring kids. He is also an actor and has starred in a TV drama and the acclaimed film, Otelo Burning.

Clint van der Merwe – 'The Sergeant Major'

Clint is the beach co-ordinator and lifeguard trainer. He’s a strict no nonsense leader. He is also an adrenaline junkie and if he’s not at the beach he’s out on his mountain bike.

Mxolisi Luthuli – 'Alpha male'

Lutuhli is a senior lifeguard at The Wedge. With his ‘Men of Steel' he is responsible for keeping the beach safe on big holiday days and keeps watch from the lifeguard platform.

Penni Dlamini – 'Beyonce'

Penni is a trainee lifeguard at Battery Beach. She is the first woman to compete at the annual Lifeguard Endurace Race in 2014.

Sue-Ellen Martin – 'Black Pamela Anderson'

She’s the queen B at North Beach and in the training programme. She’s fit and at the top of her game and doesn’t mince words. Sue-Ellen wants to clinch the coveted permanent position after completing the training programme.

Alvin Mtatshi – 'The Master Strategist'

At 23 years old he is the youngest acting senior lifeguard at South Beach. He keeps a vigilant eye on the sea and weather conditions and has a solid strategy for dealing with crowds.

Benni Mthethwa – 'The boy-next-door'

Benni has been on the beach front for 10 years. He is a lifeguard at Battery Beach. He was inspired to become a lifeguard from watching Baywatch. He has come face to face with his biggest fear, a great white shark.
