Idols' Freddie going under the knife

Johannesburg - Freddie Van'Dango is going to have surgery to repair his broken cheekbone.

The Idols contestant was involved in a bar brawl on August 19 which left him with the broken bone as well as facial bruising and swelling.

A press release issued by M-Net on Thursday revealed that Freddie will be admitted to hospital "in the near future".

The plastic surgeon overseeing his injuries has indicated that to avoid any further damage, Freddie should undergo surgery as soon as possible.

Costs covered by M-Net

According to the statement, the production's medical insurance does not cover any injuries sustained during off-time or where alcohol was involved.

M-Net has however agreed to pay for Freddie's surgery.

Theo Erasmus, M-Net Director: General Entertainment, said "The well-being of our Idols contestants is extremely important to us and we would have done this for any of the contestants who are still part of the show."

Freddie is only expected to spend a short time in hospital and will thus be able to stay in the competition. That's if people are still voting for him.

While Freddie is grateful to M-Net, he is more concerned about how the viewers see him now.

He said: "It's incredible. I'm so thankful. I also want to ask everyone to vote based on our performances. Not because they feel sorry for me or hate me for the way I behaved on Friday night. We all deserve a fair and equal chance to become the next Idol."

On Friday Freddie will perform Cee Lo Green's Forget You along with the Mzansi Youth Choir in the choir week spectacular. The show will air on M-Net (DStv 101) and Mzansi Magic (107) on Sunday August 28 at 17:30.
