Idols: Obakeng first to leave

2012-08-08 07:57
Johannesburg - The Idols fans voted in their hundreds of thousands and 26-year-old Obakeng Ramaboa from Munsieville in Krugersdorp became the first casualty of the Idols Season 8 Spectaculars on Tuesday night.

Over 200 000 more votes were cast for this year's Top 10 competition than for last year's Top 10, but unfortunately "OBK" was the contestant who received the fewest votes, and his Idols dream came to an end.

Singer Louise Carver, the Top 10's mentor last week, was the special guest star in Tuesday's Results Show which was broadcast live from the Mosaïek Teatro.

Louise performed her new single How You Gonna Do It. When prompted to choose her favourites from the Top 10 show, Louise picked Khaya, Tshidi and Chloe.

Idols host ProVerb kicked the show off by splitting the Top 10 into a top half and a bottom half, based on this week's votes, and surprisingly Nosipho, Obakeng, Monde, Dom and Melissa found themselves in the bottom half.

At the end, it was down to Melissa and Obakeng, but it was the smooth crooner from Gauteng who got the boot after the judges declined to use their save.

The pressure is on and the result means the remaining contestants will have to work that much harder this week, when Tamara Dey will mentor the Top 9 Idols.

There's an added bonus for the Top 9 on Friday: they will get the chance to perform on the same stage as John Legend in the Top 9 Spectacular!

The Top 9 Spectacular will be broadcast on M-Net, M-Net HD and Mzansi Magic at 17:30 on Sunday, 12 August.

I didn't read the article, simply because I'm not interested to read about crap that I have to pay for on MNet. I'm sure its the new compact viewers that actually watch and follows this idols crap. It is by far the most pathetic attempt at getting non musical, totally false voices to sing in the finals, It is such a scam and a waste of airtime. Put something better on Multichoice, give us value for our money.

    And this is huge news......

      william.letsong.5 - 2012-08-08 08:49

My point exactly. Why is it even on here? Do I care who gets his or her ass kicked on idols? No I don't give a damn. Just like Multichoice's programming, some of the headlines on here are just as pathetic. But than again, it is one media house, can't blame them.

200K people (possible viewers) voted; does it not occur to you that they might be interested in such news too? If an article is not of interest to you, don't read it and don't assume your interests are similar to all news24 readers. *NUFFSYD*

I still can't believe that in this so called new south Africa we still have people who see colors not talent, why does everything have to be racial? This is a sick country.

      DuToitCoetzee - 2012-08-08 09:42

Guys, I do not know if the finalist have talent or not, but I agree with you William. I am also getting tired of the Idols concept. Hell, enough is enough. I have even skipped previous seasons as well. They now even have a "soek na die Sanger" or something on Kyknet and according to me it is pathetic. Please give us something new!!!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!

  • darinjgraham - 2012-08-08 10:15

Where did you get the details for the number of votes? I've been working on comparing the ratings as votes and it's down this year by around 30%.

Its funny how this people claim thy dont watch the show yet know for a fact that the contestants cant sing and the other stating that thy wont watch because it is i quote "affirmative action show" before even listening to this people if thy actualy can sing...judging based on color.Mind you it was all well when on the previous seasons whites dominated the show and he had no problem with it whatsoever "mind you" i enjoyed all talent "previous seasons"and didnt even think those people were there because of the color of their skin but rather their talent...

I will not be voting for anybody this season...At the end of the day, Idols is really just an elaborate scheme to get you to give your money to the cellular networks...And I have much better things to spend my money on...
