Idols: Obakeng first to leave

Johannesburg - The Idols fans voted in their hundreds of thousands and 26-year-old Obakeng Ramaboa from Munsieville in Krugersdorp became the first casualty of the Idols Season 8 Spectaculars on Tuesday night.

Over 200 000 more votes were cast for this year's Top 10 competition than for last year's Top 10, but unfortunately "OBK" was the contestant who received the fewest votes, and his Idols dream came to an end.

Singer Louise Carver, the Top 10's mentor last week, was the special guest star in Tuesday's Results Show which was broadcast live from the Mosaïek Teatro.

Louise performed her new single How You Gonna Do It. When prompted to choose her favourites from the Top 10 show, Louise picked Khaya, Tshidi and Chloe.

Idols host ProVerb kicked the show off by splitting the Top 10 into a top half and a bottom half, based on this week's votes, and surprisingly Nosipho, Obakeng, Monde, Dom and Melissa found themselves in the bottom half.

At the end, it was down to Melissa and Obakeng, but it was the smooth crooner from Gauteng who got the boot after the judges declined to use their save.

The pressure is on and the result means the remaining contestants will have to work that much harder this week, when Tamara Dey will mentor the Top 9 Idols.

There's an added bonus for the Top 9 on Friday: they will get the chance to perform on the same stage as John Legend in the Top 9 Spectacular!

The Top 9 Spectacular will be broadcast on M-Net, M-Net HD and Mzansi Magic at 17:30 on Sunday, 12 August.
