Idols SA: Tumi talks about the song she never got to sing

Johannesburg – Idols fans across social media were shocked to see the talented Tumi Maroba voted off this week.

The 21-year-old musical theatre student from Vosloosrus is the fourth contestant to leave Idols SA season 10.

We chatted to Tumi about her Idols journey and what's next.

Channel24:
What did you enjoy most about the experience?

Tumi:
Getting to learn how the music industry works. I had the opportunity to work with some great musicians and awesome mentors. And performing on that huge stage for fans was the most amazing experience. I also learnt how to open up myself more and do what I love doing.

Channel24:
What does a typical day in the life of an Idols contestant look like?

Tumi:
Interviews, rehearsals and learning your lyrics; it’s more hectic than what I’m used to. It gets you out there and it makes you work hard. That’s the life of an Idols contestant.

Channel24:
How does it feel to be going back to your 'real life'?

Tumi:
I’m bit sad that I’m going home but I’m also excited to see my family and go back to my normal life. Things have changed now that I’ve been an Idols contestant. I’m not going to sit around and do nothing. I’ll probably record a few demos, and get myself out there while I still have the opportunity and I’m still relevant. I’m going to push and work hard.

Channel24:
What song did you prepare for the stripped down performance?

Tumi:
I prepared Spin My World Around by DJ Kent and The Arrows. We approached the song with more of an R&B feel. For me it was more about expressing the lyrics than it being the typical dance song. But towards the end we switched it back to the original. I would have loved to connect with South Africans on that level because a lot of us love house music. I wanted to show the beautiful romantic side of the song and bring it back with the house feel towards the end.

Channel24:
What was your favourite performance?

Tumi:
It’s really hard to choose but there are two performances that I think were my best. Run To You, by Whitney Houston and Birthday, by Katy Perry. I really enjoyed performing those songs.

Channel24:
What is the most valuable piece of advice you got from the judges?

Tumi:
I am a very shy person but when I’m performing I come out of my shell and give it my all. It was nice to have that affirmed by the judges. One of the things that Randall said to me is that I am a natural performer and I shouldn’t stop what I’m doing. I really believe that me performing is my God given talent and I will continue.
