Idols judge: Winners don't take it further

Cape Town - New Idols judge Unathi Msengana think SA Idols winners have not managed to take their success further.

Msengana spoke to Channel24 on Monday at the Cape Town auditions for Idols season seven, held at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.

When questioned about the value of a reality show such as Idols, Msengana admitted that the show can in some ways hinder the South African music industry. "It can be a hindrance in the sense that, the majority of the Idols winners haven't managed to, you know, take the baton and continue the relay," said Msengana.

"They've been catapulted from this incredible platform, and I find that they've not managed to take it further."

However, the first-time Idols judge believes the show is an asset to the country, saying "South Africans are investing in it and they are the consumers."

Even though she's new on the panel, the Metro FM radio personality is an Idols fan. When asked who her favourite Idols winner is, she said "Karin, by far." Karin Kortje won Idols season three in 2005.

Msengana was joined at the judges' table by Randall Abrahams, Gareth Cliff and guest judge, singer Danny K.
