New York - Jersey Shore has been axed.

MTV confirmed the forthcoming sixth season of the reality TV show - which will premiere in October - will be its final series, but the network is to commemorate the end of the programme with a one-hour special entitled Gym, Tan, Look Back, on 6 September.

The episode will feature interviews with the Jersey Shore cast and a sneak peek of the sixth series, plus there will be a look back at some of the show's highlights since it began in December 2009.

Snooki & JWoww

The show has inspired a number of spin-offs including Geordie Shore - the English version of the programme, which takes place in Newcastle, north-east England - and Jersey Shore stars Snooki and Jenni 'JWoww' Farley have gone on to create their own reality show, Snooki & JWoww.

The news comes after Snooki - whose real name is Nicole Polizzi - gave birth to her and fiance Jionni LaValle's son Lorenzo Dominic on Sunday, and she recently admitted her previous wild antics had taken a backseat while she prepared for motherhood.

What's more, Mike 'The Situation' Sorrentino - one of the main men in the programme - is currently starring in British reality TV show Celebrity Big Brother and fellow Jersey Shore star Pauly D, whose real name is Paul DelVecchio, has also been in his own spin-off show, The Pauly D Project.

Jersey Shore follows the wild lives of eight housemates spending their summers mainly in Jersey Shore, New Jersey, but the cast have also spent time in Miami Beach and Italy in the second and fourth seasons respectively.
