Cape Town – South Africa and the world is getting Law & Order: Cape Town when a first season of 12 episodes of the popular American legal drama will start filming with a South African cast in the Mother City from May 2012.
The massive production that will lead to road closures and which will be filmed entirely on location in Cape Town, follows Russia, France and Britain where local versions of the legal procedural drama have been produced.
It's estimated that a cash injection of R3m per episode will be pumped into the local economy. The Cape Film Commission (CFC) announced that Africa HD's James Makwana and Kenny Christmas are putting together the major television series after Africa HD secured the format rights for a South African version which will be set in the Mother City.
African production company DO Productions will be involved with most of the crew being local South Africans.
"Africa HD has secured the format rights to a South African franchise of Law & Order," says CFC commissioner Denis Lillie, saying that the TV drama will be entirely Cape Town based and that the CFC promises to give the production the "hands-on assistance with securing locations, permits and any other aspects to do with filming that they require".
Road closures coming
Capetonians and visitors can expect road closures from May 2012 since the show will feature numerous street scenes from the Mother City, but the CFC says "road closures and minor inconveniences associated with the shoot will be offset multiple times by the gains that the region wil incur".
Law & Order: Cape Town presents "a rare opportunity to showcase the city to watchers around the world".
Major coup
"This is a major coup for our region which will create jobs for the local film industry," says Alan Winde, the Western Cape minister of economic development and tourism.
Africa HD that's producing Law & Order: Cape Town is also planning a new global satellite TV channel which will be dedicated to African content in high definition (HD).
