Liezel van der Westhuizen leaves Expresso

Cape Town – Expresso morning show presenter Liezel van der Westhuizen is off the show.

Expresso said "numerous changes" are coming for the SABC3 show which just turned two and is produced from its glass penthouse on top of a high rise in Sea Point, Cape Town.

While Katlego Maboe, Ewan Strydom, Leigh-Ann Williams and Graeme Richards remain as Expresso presenters for now, Liezel van der Westhuizen will be watching Expresso from home.

The bubbly blonde will no longer feature on the show regularly, although Tswelopele Productions says she might still appear on an ad hoc basis in the future.

The TV industry's been abuzz since September when rumours first started circulating that discussions are under way to axe some of the Expresso presenters.

Expresso will soon add Johannesburg-based presenters to help with more Johannesburg coverage for the show which has been a brilliant showcase for Cape Town the past two years, but has also seen the menagerie of presenters travel countrywide to cover stories.

'I'm sad to not be live on the show'

"I'm sad to not be live on the show each morning and seeing my Expresso family daily, it's been an amazing journey and I've grown in many aspects, not only as a presenter but as a person as well.

"It's wonderful to be part of such a successful breakfast show. I look forward to waking up and watching the show from home," said Van der Westhuizen, who will be focusing on her studies.

Expresso said the Tswelope Production wishes Van der Westhuizen and Johnson "best of luck in their future endeavours".

Kia Johnson, who went from being a permanent face on Expresso to working on a freelance basis, is now presenting traffic reports in Afrikaans on the new rival morning breakfast show Dagbreek which started on kykNET (DStv channel 144) this month.
