Local TV ad man shot dead

Cape Town – The man who warned thousands of motorists in TV ads against drinking and driving was shot dead on Wednesday night in Belhar.

Francois Tiemie, 40, was shot in the back of the head at 17:50 on Wednesday about 50m from his family's house by an 18-year-old man.

Tiemie was known for his comment in the "Pappa wag vir jou" (Daddy is waiting for you) ad: "Don't be scared of me, I am not an animal", after which his best friend, David Pietersen, 54, comes with "Pappa wag vir jou".

The ad was made by the liquor company Brandhouse for their campaign against drinking and driving.

Abigail Hendricks, 21, the owner of the house in front of which the incident happened, was on her way home when she saw the murder. "I was walking down the road when I saw the two arguing in the road."

Not gang related

"He (Tiemie) had a knife in his hand and he waved it in the other man's direction."

Hendricks said Tiemie with his last attempt barely missed the other man, after which the suspect walked away.

"Tiemie and one of his friends, who tried to calm him down, walked away."

Hendricks said the other man returned with a gun and said: "You will see now, you will see now." "He then shot him in the back of the head. Blood was flowing and he later started choking."

Belhar police spokesperson captain Joe Wilson confirmed that the two men had an argument and that they started fighting. "The suspect was arrested 10 minutes later by police in his parents' house."

Wilson said the incident was not gang related.
