Johannesburg – With the cancellation of local music channel MK on DStv, MTV has stepped up to create a space for local musicians to still be able to broadcast their songs and videos to a national audience.
From Wednesday, SA talent will be featured daily on MTV (DStv channel 130) at 16:40 alongside international acts on Pop Chart (Mondays), Rock Chart (Tuesdays), Dance Chart (Thursdays) and New S**t , which will showcase brand new music videos every weekday at 17:30.
Another addition will be short inserts throughout the channel by local celebrities like DJ Fresh, Rob Forbes, Sade Giliberti and Anele Mdoda.
MTV has also launched a design competition, Art Beat, where the winner will win an internship at Viacom International Media Networks Africa (VIMN Africa).
A revamped local entertainment experience
Alex Okosi, vice president of VIMN Africa, hopes the new content will give the SA audience a better entertainment experience.
"An investment in strong new shows, more localised content and flexible scheduling sensitive to the local audience will ensure that MTV connects even more closely with our South African viewers.”
The channel will also introduce a new local interactive magazine show soon, but details surrounding the celebrity that will host it is not yet known. From abroad, a new Jersey Shore-style show will be premiering this month, but The Valleys will take place in Cardiff, Wales.
