MasterChef SA contestant Ian dishes on Sipho's cooking style

Cape Town – When Siphokazi Mdlankomo made her first appearance on MasterChef SA and declared that dynamite comes in small packages she set out to prove just that.

Week after week the pint sized domestic worker set out to become a force to be reckoned with in the kitchen. And she did.

This week Sipho will head to the kitchen for one final challenge.

While it is very riveting watching Sipho cook on screen we got the insider info from fellow Masterchef SA contestant Ian Young who cooked with her.

He dishes on what happened in the kitchen and tells us more about her strengths and weakness.

Channel24:
What are Sipho’s strengths?

Ian:
As much as Sipho has no formal training she is incredibly competent across many fairly complicated dishes and her repertoire is wide, which include her being very comfortable with more traditional South African dishes. She is able to borrow from different techniques and styles to create dishes that are very inventive, she also has a very good palate and instinct for taste.

What are Sipho’s weak points?

Ian:
She sometimes doubts herself and her ability and gets a little flustered as a result, but usually she is able to pull herself together and push through. A great example of this was the David Higgs challenge when she had to do the crazy chocolate desert dish, you could see that her initial thought was that there was no ways that she was going to be able to pull it off (I think that we all felt that about that dish so she wasn't on her own with that thought). Half way through the challenge she hit a big wobble but a few minutes later after a few deep breathes she nailed it - dish of the day.

Channel24:
Who will handle the pressure of cooking for Marco Pierre White better?

Ian:
I think that if it is a dessert Sipho will doubt herself in the beginning but will get on with it. Roxi is usually very comfortable with desserts so she may be calmer in her approach. If it is a meat challenge I think that Sipho might handle the pressure better, chicken or fish they will probably handle it similarly.

Channel24:
When you cooked with Sipho in the Tapas challenge, what impressed you most about her?

Ian:
Once we agreed what we were doing and the duties were divided Sipho got on with it with pace - she is extremely fast but not to the detriment of the taste. It became very clear to me in that challenge how good her palate is.
