Cape Town – MasterChef South Africa is currently being filmed at the Nederburg wine estate and the famous Nederburg Winery in Paarl, it has been revealed.
The world-famous Johann Graue Auction Hall, which is the annual venue of the Nederburg Auction, has been transformed into a state-of-the-art kitchen where reality contestants are battling it out to win the top prize.
The 1000m² venue has over 20 cooking stations equipped with state-of-the-art appliances and utensils. To create the floor and walls, over 15 tons of wood was sourced locally, while 5km of under-floor cabling has been used.
Distinctly South African
The Nederburg estate's gardens also got spruced up and landscaped by M-Net to look good for the show.
"We wanted to shoot in the Winelands because Cape vineyards are immediately recognisable to local and international viewers as distinctly South African," says Anne Davis, M-Net's senior commissioning editor of MasterChef South Africa.
"The Western Cape is also the culinary capital of South Africa and has great access to fresh produce," she added.
Visitors to the estate are kept away so as not to disturb the production.
The first season of the cooking reality competition is set to premiere on the pay TV channel on March 20 and will run for 18 weeks.
