Cape Town - The winner of MasterChef SA will win prizes amounting to R8m.

The local version of the popular reality cooking show kicks off with auditions in Johannesburg on Saturday, and the producers have now announced what hopefuls will be contending for.

The prizes were detailed in a press release issued by M-Net on Friday.

According to the statement, South Africa's first MasterChef will receive "cash, a car, an overseas trip, a sommelier course, one-on-one master classes from an award-winning cellarmaster, a trip to Italy and - a first for local reality shows - his or her own restaurant."

'Unprecedented'

M-Net's channel head, Pierre Cloete, expressed excitement at this "unprecedented" prize package and attributes the amount of sponsors to the massive appeal of the show.

"First we received thousands of entries and now M-Net's premier show for 2012 is supported by top, premier South African brands.

"A huge thank you to our mainline sponsor, Robertsons, as well as Hyundai, Woolworths, Nederburg and Southern Sun, whose combined prize offerings are rewriting South African television history," said Cloete.

The prize for the winner of the first season of MasterChef South Africa consists of:

*R250 000 in cash from Robertsons

*A Hyundai Elantra 1.6 GLS, valued at over R190 000

*An all expenses paid culinary experience in Italy courtesy of official food sponsor, Woolworths, including flights, accommodation and an Italian cookery course

*From the official wine sponsor, Nederburg: A customised sommelier course developed for the winner by the South African Sommelier Association, using Nederburg wines to demonstrate wine and food pairing; one-on-one masterclasses presented by Nederburg’s award-winning cellarmaster, Razvan Macici; and a year's supply of Nederburg Winemaster's Reserve Wines

*A restaurant at a Southern Sun venue

MasterChef SA auditions take place in Johannesburg on December 3, in Cape Town on December 10 and in Durban on December 17.

Why is it that SA always follow what others do and never leads with innovation?
