MasterChef model buckles under pressure

Cape Town - Bye, Guy.

Guy Clark, a 30-year-old former model from Cape Town, handed in his MasterChef SA apron on Tuesday after presenting an incomplete dish in a daunting pressure test.

Guy's departure also revealed the Top 10 contestants left competing for the title of SA's first MasterChef.

Tuesday's episode started with an invention test which required contestants to pick a country as well as a cooking method and prepare a dish accordingly.

Around the world

Guy drew Great Britain and poaching and proceeded to attempt a gourmet version of the classic pub food. While his yellowtail poached in beer impressed Chef Pete, his mash was lumpy and mushy peas unimpressive.

27-year-old Khaya, who picked France as a country and steaming as a method, won the challenge with her chicken ballotine and turned carrots.

Samantha Nolan picked South Africa and frying and decided on vetkoek and mince. While her vetkoek were prepared to perfection, Chef Bennie said her mince was too heavily seasoned.

Sarel's simple chocolate custard (Brazil) and Jade's chewy burger buns (USA) landed them in the bottom four along with Guy and Samantha.

Rising under pressure

The bottom four were tasked with recreating Chef Andrew's twice baked three-cheese soufflé with a Waldorf salad, onion braise and Gruyere tuile.

Sarel's dish fared best, even without his cheese sauce. Jade put her soufflés in the oven too late, leaving them undercooked, while Pete called Samantha's offering "cakey".

Guy had the most trouble, and according to the judges, he didn't read the recipes properly. Undercooked soufflé and bacon and an incomplete salad sent him packing.

MasterChef SA airs on M-Net and M-Net HD on Tuesdays at 19:30.
